Miles of Nature Close to Home

Cary's greenway system has become one of the town's most valued public assets, offering residents easy access to nature across a rapidly growing community. With more than 95 miles of paved trails, the network stretches through wooded areas, follows local streams, and links neighborhoods in ways that make outdoor recreation both convenient and inviting.
The town began building the system in 1980 with a long-term focus on preserving open space while creating safe, accessible routes away from traffic. Over time, the greenways have grown into a defining feature of Cary, serving both practical and recreational needs for residents throughout the area.
The trails are designed to be welcoming to a wide range of users. Most are paved, smooth, and broad enough to accommodate families out for a walk, runners on daily exercise routes, and cyclists moving at an easy pace. Their layout and design make them approachable for people of different ages and experience levels.
For many residents, the greenways offer a simple way to enjoy the outdoors without leaving town. They provide a setting where people can exercise, explore, and spend time in quieter natural surroundings while still remaining closely connected to the community.
Popular routes like the 7.1-mile Black Creek Greenway and the White Oak Creek Greenway connect major spots like Bond Park, Lake Crabtree County Park, and even link up with the famous American Tobacco Trail. Dogs on leashes are always welcome too.
Keep your eyes open for wildlife along these natural corridors. You might spot herons, ducks, and other birds near the streams, plus squirrels and other woodland creatures. The greenways connect to over 30 parks throughout Cary, so you can easily combine trail time with playground visits, picnics, or sports activities. Several trails feature exercise stations, benches for resting, and even art installations that make each walk a little different.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A) Hansen's disease
Leprosy is frequently referred to as Hansen's disease (or Hansen disease). It is named after the Norwegian physician Gerhard Armauer Hansen, who in 1873 discovered Mycobacterium leprae, the bacterium that causes the disease. This name is often used in medical and professional contexts to reduce the social stigma historically associated with the term "leprosy".
