Explore Fred G. Bond Metro Park
Right in the heart of Cary, Fred G. Bond Metro Park is a 310-acre escape that feels worlds away from the busy streets around it. At the center of it all is Bond Lake — a beautiful 42-acre freshwater lake that sets the tone for the whole experience. Whether you want to spend a couple of hours or a full day, there's truly something here for just about everyone. The park opened in 1985 and has been a beloved community gathering spot ever since, earning its nickname as "the oasis of Cary" for good reason.
Getting out on the water is one of the biggest draws here. The park's boathouse rents kayaks, canoes, pedal boats, rowboats, and even sailboats, and life jackets are included with every rental — no experience needed for most boats. Prefer to stay on dry land? You'll find 4.2 miles of trails winding through the woods and along the lake, including the popular 2.1-mile Lake Trail that's great for walking, jogging, or biking. The paths are dog-friendly too, as long as your pup is on a leash. Fishing is another favorite activity — the lake is stocked with trout, and the boathouse sells cane poles and bait to get you started (a fishing license is required for ages 16 and up).
Bird lovers will want to bring their binoculars — spotters have counted over 32 species in the park, and bald eagles are seen near the lake several times a week. Keep an eye out for eastern bluebirds, belted kingfishers, great horned owls, and herons, depending on where you wander. When you're ready for a break, the park has plenty of picnic tables, a 200-foot boardwalk, covered shelters, and a snack concession at the boathouse. Families with kids will love the recently renovated Lazy Daze Playground, which got brand-new equipment in 2024 — including a mega slide. The park also has an 18-hole disc golf course, athletic fields, a challenge course, and the 350-seat Sertoma Amphitheater that hosts live performances throughout the year.

Hello, Turks and Caicos!
Gateway to Crystal Waters and White Sand Paradise

Welcome to Turks and Caicos, a collection of sun-drenched islands where the water is so brilliantly turquoise you'll think someone turned up the color saturation. Tucked just southeast of the Bahamas in the Caribbean, this British Overseas Territory is an easy escape from everyday life. From RDU, connecting flights through major hubs like Charlotte, Miami, and Atlanta will get you to Providenciales International Airport (PLS) in roughly five to six hours — a small price to pay for what awaits. Whether you're after world-class beaches, underwater adventure, or simply doing absolutely nothing in the most beautiful setting imaginable, Turks and Caicos delivers.
Why Visit Turks and Caicos?
Grace Bay Beach: Consistently ranked one of the best beaches on the planet, Grace Bay is the kind of place that makes you rethink your life back home. This 12-mile stretch of powdery white sand along the northern coast of Providenciales is lined with resorts, restaurants, and calm, swim-friendly water that shifts from pale aqua to deep blue the further out you look.
Chalk Sound National Park: This stunning landlocked lagoon is one of the most jaw-dropping natural sights in the Caribbean. Hundreds of small, rocky limestone islands dot the electric turquoise water, and it's best explored by kayak or paddleboard — gliding through the calm lagoon while rock iguanas sun themselves on the cays is a memory that sticks with you.
Little Water Cay Boat Excursion: Just a short boat ride from Providenciales, this protected nature sanctuary is home to the endangered Turks and Caicos rock iguana — and they're surprisingly friendly. Half-day and full-day tours pick you up right from the beach at your resort, stopping at snorkeling reefs, remote sandbars, and this beloved iguana island for a wildlife encounter unlike anything you'll find at a zoo.
