Police Records Link Former Cary Manager’s Car to 2016 Drug Probe

Police records released this week link a vehicle registered to former Cary Town Manager Sean Stegall to a 2016 drug investigation at a local hotel, though authorities never filed charges against him. Officers observed the car outside the Harrison Hotel, which was under investigation for suspected drug activity, and later traced it to Stegall’s home address. The report does not confirm who was driving the vehicle.

Cary Town Council members said they reviewed the records earlier this month and chose to release them to the public in the interest of transparency. Town officials described the documents as raising questions but declined to speculate about events that occurred nearly a decade ago.

Police Chief Terry Sult said his review found no basis for further action and confirmed that Stegall was never charged in connection with the case.

The disclosure comes as Stegall faces a separate criminal investigation into his management of public funds. State auditors identified potential misuse of town money, including spending on luxury hotel rooms, land deals, and educational expenses. The matter remains under review by the district attorney and state investigators.

Cary Readers On Town Priorities After Audit Findings

From Issue #838 (February 7, 2026)

Poll Question: "What should be the Town of Cary's priority moving forward?"

Readers overwhelmingly called for increased transparency and internal oversight, with 55.56% of the vote— more than double the next closest option.

Other Priorities:

  • Review and strengthen ethics training for leadership: 19%

  • Prioritize accountability through ongoing investigations: 19%

  • Focus on the positive: Cary's financial health is strong: 6%

  • Not sure / Need more information: 6%

📊 Key Takeaway:

This poll shows the progression of reader sentiment from the earlier Issue #816 poll where 49% expressed lack of confidence in the investigation. Now, readers are moving from criticism to concrete demands: they want systemic reforms focused on transparency and oversight, not just investigation of past wrongdoing.

💬 Reader Concerns:

The comments reveal three main frustrations:

  1. Culture of fear: Employees feared retaliation for speaking up

  2. Financial accountability: Questions about the $400,000 severance payment

  3. Organizational bloat: Concerns about too many top-level managers

What Would Help Address Safety Concerns After Juvenile Crash?

Following a single-car crash on US Highway 1 near Tryon Road that sent four juveniles to the hospital with serious injuries, Cary Spotlight asked readers what measures they believe would best improve safety for young drivers. The accident, which occurred late Friday night, ruled out alcohol but left investigators working to determine the cause.

🏆 Top Response: Increased Parental Supervision and Curfews, with 36.84%, emerged as readers' preferred safety measure.

Poll Breakdown:

Readers expressed strong support for enforcement and supervision:

  • Increased parental supervision and curfews led with 36.84%, reflecting a belief that family oversight is key to preventing accidents.

  • Stricter enforcement of speed limits was a close second, with many readers emphasizing the need for visible consequences and consistent ticketing.

  • More education and training programs for young drivers garnered significant support, with multiple readers calling for enhanced training beyond current requirements.

  • Improved road lighting and signage received minimal support, suggesting readers see behavioral factors as more critical than infrastructure.

  • A small number of readers selected "Other" to provide additional perspectives.

💬 Representative Reader Comments:

"Also more training for teenage drivers."

"Our youth is constantly on their phones while driving. Not just them, but this is a big problem."
"I have been a Raleigh-area resident for 5 years and rarely see drivers pulled over and ticketed for speeding, running red lights, or expired tags. I previously lived in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania where enforcement of those is at a much higher level than here. I just assumed local law enforcement here decided not to prioritize it and as a result, people are speeding everywhere. Zero consequences."

"Speed enforcement is the low hanging fruit of safety. Just pick it!"
