Weekend Winter Storm Could Bring Snow
Central North Carolina is under a Winter Storm Watch from Saturday afternoon through Monday as a cold front and Gulf moisture set the stage for a mix of wintry precipitation. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are all possible, with the heaviest impacts expected west of I-95 into the mountain regions. Cold air from the north will lock in sub-freezing temperatures throughout the weekend.
This system is expected to bring more significant impacts than last weekend’s cold rain event. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become hazardous, and power outages are possible due to ice accumulation on infrastructure. The Winter Storm Severity Index forecasts a high probability of moderate disruption, including travel delays and potential closures.
While exact precipitation types and amounts remain uncertain due to possible warm layers aloft, residents are encouraged to prepare for a range of wintry weather. Behind the storm, bitter cold will persist, possibly leading to refreezing of any melt during the day.
Travel is not advised during the storm window, and updates from the National Weather Service should be monitored as the forecast evolves.
Just curious…
As central North Carolina prepares for a weekend of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, we want to hear from you. What’s your biggest concern heading into this winter weather event?
What’s Your Top Concern About the Winter Storm?
Let’s Be Frank: A Modern Take on Sinatra’s Intimate Jazz Era
Award-winning jazz vocalist Sachal Vasandani will bring his interpretive depth and dynamic presence to Let’s Be Frank, a concert celebrating Frank Sinatra’s small group recordings. Joined by pianist and arranger Christian Tamburr and his quartet, Vasandani explores selections from Sinatra’s radio broadcasts and lesser-known sessions.
The show draws from material recorded between 1948 and 1959, including the To Be Perfectly Frank radio show and the iconic Live in Australia concert with the Red Norvo Quintet. The arrangements spotlight Sinatra’s vocal phrasing and emotional range in an intimate jazz setting.
Vasandani’s performance style—capable of both swing swagger and subtle vulnerability—makes him well-suited for this repertoire. The concert promises a blend of nostalgic charm and contemporary interpretation.
This event offers a rare opportunity to hear Sinatra’s small-group work performed live with a fresh perspective rooted in modern jazz.

Walk for Peace Reaches Siler City as Monks Draw Hundreds
The Walk for Peace, led by a group of Buddhist monks, arrived in Siler City Wednesday evening after passing through several central North Carolina counties. The group, known for walking barefoot and sleeping outdoors, has captured public attention throughout the South for its message of peace and mindfulness. Their visit drew hundreds to Jordan Matthews High School, where community members gathered for a moment of reflection.
Organizers anticipate a public welcome in downtown Raleigh on Saturday, January 24, although timing may shift due to winter weather forecasts. Snow and ice could challenge the group’s progress, but the walk will continue regardless. Medical guidance has been shared to ensure their safety, particularly around cold-weather risks and proper gear.
The monks encourage non-contact greetings and mindful observation. Symbolic moments, such as regifting flowers from one bystander to another, highlight the walk’s core message: peace and joy grow through sharing. The journey, documented widely online, continues to draw support across faiths and ideologies.
This movement has proven to be more than symbolic; it has united people across regions, offering a rare moment of communal presence and reflection.
