Hello, Curaçao!
Gateway to Dutch Caribbean Beaches and Colorful Culture

Welcome to Curaçao, a place where pastel-colored Dutch colonial buildings line the waterfront, where some of the Caribbean's clearest waters lap against pristine beaches, and where three languages blend together in one sun-soaked island paradise.

While there are no direct flights from RDU (Raleigh-Durham) to Curaçao's Hato International Airport (CUR), convenient one-stop connections through major hubs like Charlotte, Miami, or Atlanta make reaching this Dutch Caribbean gem straightforward. Whether you're drawn by world-class diving, UNESCO-listed architecture, or simply the chance to unwind on powder-soft sand, Curaçao offers an unforgettable tropical escape with a uniquely European twist.

Why Visit Curaçao?

  • Willemstad's Handelskade: This iconic waterfront district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that looks like a rainbow came to life along the harbor. The famous pastel-colored buildings date back to Dutch colonial times, and you can walk across the Queen Emma Bridge—a floating pontoon bridge that swings open to let ships pass—while exploring charming shops, cafés, and museums tucked into centuries-old structures.

  • World-Class Beaches and Snorkeling: Curaçao boasts over 35 beaches, each with its own personality and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Cas Abao Beach offers powdery white sand and excellent snorkeling right from shore, while Porto Mari Beach features a double reef teeming with colorful fish, sea turtles, and coral formations that make every swim feel like an underwater adventure.

  • Christoffel National Park: Just 30 minutes from Willemstad, this 4,500-acre park protects the island's highest point and showcases Curaçao's rugged natural side. Hike to the summit of Mount Christoffel for sunrise views across the entire island, spot wild deer and rare birds along scenic trails, or explore hidden caves adorned with ancient petroglyphs left by the island's original inhabitants.

Explore the Trolls at Dorothea Dix Park

Get ready for a magical treasure hunt! Five giant trolls have made their home at Dorothea Dix Park, and they're waiting for you to find them. Created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, these whimsical giants are built entirely from reclaimed wood and tucked throughout the park's 308 acres.

Each troll is part of a fairytale adventure called "The Grandmother Tree" that connects seven trolls across North Carolina — five here at Dix Park, plus two siblings in Charlotte and High Point. The trolls aren't just fun to look at — they tell an important story about taking care of our planet, with each one made from salvaged materials like old barn wood, pallets, and fallen branches.

Finding all five trolls is an adventure in itself. Meet Mother Strong Tail and baby Dix along the Pine Loop Trail, discover Dax and Dux hiding in the Big Field pine grove near the Dog Park, and seek out Daddy Bird Eye on the hillside of the Grove. Each troll guards a secret symbol that helps you decode the location of the enchanted Grandmother Tree. You can touch, hug, and take pictures with all the trolls, and you can even climb on Mother Strong Tail's tail! The trolls are spread throughout the park on natural trails, so wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and plan a few hours to find them all.

Beyond the trolls, Dix Park offers plenty more to enjoy. Take a break at one of the picnic areas, let kids run free at the playground, or explore the historic Stone Houses. On weekends, you can hop on a free shuttle to get around the park. Keep your eyes open for wildlife too — this beautiful 308-acre park is home to birds, deer, and other creatures who share the space with our wooden friends.

Good to Know:

Location: 1030 Richardson Drive, Raleigh, NC 27603 | Directions
Hours: Dawn to dusk, seven days a week
Amenities: Free parking, free weekend shuttles (Fri-Sun), restrooms, picnic areas, playground, ADA parking spaces
Entry: Free!
Tip: The trolls are in wooded areas with uneven ground and may have poison ivy nearby. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and bring water. Weekend shuttles run close to troll locations but walking on natural surfaces is still required. Plan 2-3 hours to find all five trolls.
