WakeMed Milk Bank Receives Major Donation

Lauren Hildebrandt, a mother of two from Willow Spring, has donated over 2,700 ounces of breast milk to the WakeMed Mothers’ Milk Bank. Her donations followed the births of her two children, with the first yielding 2,138 ounces and the second adding 633 ounces. The combined amount has supported approximately 5,460 feedings for premature infants in NICUs.

WakeMed reports that more than 10,000 babies are born prematurely in North Carolina each year, and donated breast milk provides vital antibodies that help protect these vulnerable newborns from illness. The milk bank streamlines the donation process, offering home pickups for large donations after an initial approval.

Hildebrandt was initially unsure what to do with her surplus supply, but once she learned about the milk bank, she saw an opportunity to help other families. Her experience underscores how individual donations can have a wide-reaching impact.

She encourages other nursing mothers to consider donating their extra milk, especially when their own supply exceeds what their children need. More information about the donation process can be found on WakeMed’s website. Mothers' Milk Bank

Just curious…

Before reading this story, were you aware that breast milk donation banks like WakeMed exist and serve NICU babies?

Waste Wizard Helps Cary Residents Dispose of Household Items

Redecorating a home often raises questions about what to do with old furniture that can no longer be reused. In Cary, residents have clear options for proper disposal without relying on guesswork.

Unwanted furniture can be dropped off at a Citizen’s Convenience Center, or residents can schedule a bulky item pickup by contacting 311. Some services may require a fee, depending on the item and pickup type.

For items beyond furniture, the Waste Wizard feature in Cary Collects provides detailed disposal guidance. By searching an item name, residents can quickly learn whether it belongs in recycling, trash, or a special collection program.
