Cary Man’s Holiday Light Show Sparks Joy and Generosity
Rick Grandinetti of Cary has created a Christmas light display that has gone viral, with more than 150 million views across TikTok and Instagram. The elaborate setup, which includes hundreds of thousands of lights and festive props, is more than just a visual spectacle. It serves as a fundraising effort for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The display began as a personal tribute to Grandinetti’s late father and reflects his desire to support families battling childhood cancer. Installation starts as early as August and involves a unique method of suspending lights using fishing poles and socket wrenches to reach tall trees.
Although the attraction has captured widespread attention online, Grandinetti insists that his motivation is to raise awareness and funds for a meaningful cause. He hopes to collect at least $100,000 this season.
The display is open to the public through December 27 at 101 Council Gap Road in Cary. | Read Full Story

Cary Residents Reject Use of Public Funds for Council Member’s Degree
A large majority of Cary residents—nearly 73%—oppose using town funds for a council member’s graduate education, according to a community poll. The issue surfaced after it was revealed that Mayor Pro Tem Lori Bush received over $37,000 in tuition reimbursements for a master’s degree from Northwestern University. The payments were labeled as professional development and were reportedly suggested by then-Town Manager Sean Stegall.
In response to public concern, Bush repaid the full amount, saying the reimbursement had been handled with staff input and she believed it was authorized. Her decision to return the funds was intended to maintain public confidence. Nonetheless, the controversy has led to criticism over the perceived lack of transparency and oversight.
Cary Spotlight Reader sentiment skewed sharply against the use of town funds for this purpose, with many expressing outrage, demanding resignations, and calling for stronger accountability for elected officials. Some nuanced views acknowledged the potential value of professional development but emphasized the need for clear guidelines, council approval, and public transparency.
