Question: Who found the long lost explorer David Livingston?

(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.)

Wake County Health Officials Issue Measles Alert for RDU Passengers

North Carolina health authorities are warning of a potential measles exposure at Raleigh-Durham International Airport after a traveler with a confirmed case passed through Terminal 2 while contagious. The incident occurred on December 10 between 4 and 8 a.m., prompting officials to advise anyone present during that window to monitor for symptoms through the New Year.

While the individual is not a North Carolina resident, local health departments are coordinating with national agencies to notify those who may have shared a flight. Measles, which spreads easily among unvaccinated individuals, presents with flu-like symptoms and a distinct rash.

Officials emphasized the importance of vaccination, especially as the U.S. experiences a nationwide uptick in cases. This year’s measles total is the highest since the early 1990s, driven in part by reduced vaccination rates in some areas.

Despite no confirmed in-state cases so far in 2025, the alert serves as a reminder for residents to ensure their immunizations are current, especially for children and travelers.

With a confirmed measles case passing through RDU, we want to hear from you. How are you feeling about travel and public health precautions?

WakeMed to Limit Visitors Under 12 Amid Flu Season Surge

WakeMed is set to enforce seasonal visitor limits beginning December 22, with the aim of curbing the spread of respiratory illnesses during peak flu season. The policy will prohibit children under 12 from visiting most patient care areas, including emergency departments and mental health facilities.

This annual measure is part of WakeMed’s broader infection control strategy, particularly important given the current flu season's toll. Eleven flu-related deaths have already been recorded statewide, prompting continued efforts to reduce transmission within healthcare settings.

Though the restrictions may inconvenience some families, health officials stress that protecting vulnerable patients remains the top priority. These precautions are consistent with guidelines used by hospitals nationwide during periods of heightened respiratory illness activity.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about flu activity and take personal precautions, including getting vaccinated and avoiding visits when sick.

NC DMV Adds 150 New License Examiners to Cut Wait Times

The North Carolina DMV has taken a major step to address long-standing staffing and service challenges by graduating nearly 150 new license examiners. The additions come after a legislative push to modernize the agency and reduce in-person wait times that had reached nearly three hours.

Governor Josh Stein and Commissioner Paul Tine marked the occasion at a graduation event this week, highlighting recent improvements such as new scanning equipment and expanded access to online services. The changes have already allowed tens of thousands of residents to complete licensing tasks remotely.

Backed by a mini-budget passed earlier this year, the DMV has received legislative support to increase hiring and improve technology. Commissioner Tine emphasized that while progress is being made, continued improvements are needed to streamline DMV services and enhance the customer experience.

An extensive audit released in August also outlined areas for reform, and DMV leaders say they are committed to ongoing efforts to modernize the agency and meet public expectations. Read Full Report
