Outpouring of Support for Family of Cary Teen Lost in Traffic Accident

A fatal crash in Cary on Friday afternoon claimed the life of 15‑year‑old Lena Goff, a student at Green Hope High School. Police reported that the crash occurred when a teenage driver attempted a left turn and collided with an oncoming Jeep. Lena died at the scene, while the four other teenagers in the car were released after hospital evaluation. The driver has been charged.

Friends say Lena had been on her way to prepare for her first wrestling match, a sport she had embraced with excitement. They recalled her enthusiasm for sharing practice updates and her joy in finding an activity she loved.

Many of her friends learned of her death only hours after spending time with her the night before, and said the news came as a shock. Throughout the weekend and into Monday, despite wintry weather, students visited the crash site with flowers and remembrances.

A GoFundMe campaign supporting her family has received significant community response, raising nearly $100,000. Read full report

Wake County Crash on Icy Bridge Kills One, Injures Teen

An early morning accident in Wake County on December 9 claimed the life of a 52-year-old driver. The incident occurred on US-64 West when the driver lost control of her pickup truck on an icy bridge and collided with a tree. Authorities identified the woman as Diane Ashley Watson of Middlesex.

An 18-year-old passenger was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that excessive speed for the icy conditions may have played a role in the crash.

No charges will be filed, and the investigation is ongoing.

Cary Council to Review Annexations, Zoning Changes and Facility Relocation

The Cary Town Council’s upcoming regular meeting includes votes on key development proposals and a funding request to explore relocating a town facility.

Three consent agenda items involve annexation and rezoning requests. One seeks to annex and rezone a 4.33-acre property on White Oak Church Road to allow for five single-family homes. Another proposes rezoning a 0.45-acre site on Fairbanks Road for two homes with road upgrades and electric vehicle readiness.

Council will also hold a public hearing on the annexation of 2220 Jones Franklin Road to facilitate access to town water services.

A major discussion item includes a $40,000 funding request to assess future options for the Citizen’s Convenience Center, which must vacate its current railroad-owned location by the end of 2026.

The meeting will be open to the public and broadcast on Cary’s official streaming platforms.
