Honoring Our Heroes

Unlike several other U.S. holidays now celebrated on Mondays to create long weekends, Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, marking the armistice that ended World War I in 1918.

A lot of folks get Veterans Day and Memorial Day mixed up and that’s understandable. Both honor those who’ve worn the uniform, but in different ways.

Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance a time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country. Families grieve, friends gather, and communities pause to reflect on lives lost in service.

Veterans Day, by contrast, is a day of gratitude for all who served and are still with us men and women who stepped forward when their nation called.

They’re two different holidays for a reason, but both remind us of a lasting truth: Some gave all, and all gave some.

So whether you’re honoring a fallen hero or thanking a veteran in your life, take a moment to remember the difference and the shared courage that binds them both.

Join us at Veterans Freedom Park today, November 11, from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. for Cary’s Veterans Day Observance. The ceremony will feature Marine Corps Veteran Ron Brigham as our 2025 guest speaker, along with music from the Old North State Brass Band.

Parking is available at Cary Academy (1500 N Harrison Ave) with a complimentary ADA-accessible shuttle running from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Limited seating is available, but guests are welcome and encouraged to bring their own lawn chair for comfort.

Faster Emergency Response in Wake County

Wake County EMS has reported faster response times in 2025 for high-priority calls, averaging just over 10 minutes. A marked improvement from previous years. This comes amid rising transport volumes and a growing, aging population, which is putting additional strain on emergency services.

Road congestion is also a factor. Vehicle registrations and miles traveled across the county have both increased, complicating EMS response efforts. Despite these challenges, the department is 96 percent staffed and recently received approval for 12 additional positions to help meet demand.

Demographic data shows many new residents are aged 55 and older, contributing to greater reliance on EMS services. The county plans to assess transport data later this year to inform its 2027 budget and staffing projections.

With proactive planning and resource adjustments, Wake EMS aims to continue providing timely emergency care as Wake County evolves.

How confident are you in Wake County EMS's ability to keep up with the area’s rapid growth?
