Wake County Art Teacher Wins National Award for Empowering Students with Disabilities
At Herbert Akins Road Middle School in Fuquay-Varina, art teacher Aurelis Lugo helps students with disabilities express themselves through creativity. Her classroom focuses on what each student can do, encouraging them to use art as a form of communication and confidence.
To highlight their work, Lugo founded “We Can Too,” an art show that began at school and grew into a community exhibit at the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center. This year, the program will expand to Raleigh, featuring art from students with disabilities across multiple Wake County schools.
Lugo’s efforts earned her an “Unsung Heroes” award from Voya Financial, making her the only North Carolina teacher to receive the honor. The grant will help fund the growing exhibit and continue her mission to ensure every child’s creativity is seen and celebrated. Read Full Report
Cary to Host 2025 North Carolina Walk4Hearing
The Hearing Loss Association of America will hold its annual North Carolina Walk4Hearing at Cary’s WakeMed Soccer Park on Sunday, October 12. The event begins with registration at 10:30 a.m., followed by a presentation and the start of the walk shortly after noon.
This national initiative, active since 2006, unites families, organizations, and community members to support those affected by hearing loss. Proceeds benefit both national and local programs focused on education, advocacy, and improved access to care.
The walk underscores the importance of hearing health as part of overall wellness and works to eliminate stigma surrounding hearing loss. It also connects participants with resources and a community of support.
The HLAA continues to be a national leader in hearing loss advocacy, working through grassroots chapters and public policy initiatives to promote accessible communication and empower people to live well with hearing challenges.
More information and registration details are available at walk4hearing.org/NorthCarolina.

Courage Fall at Home, NCFC Clinches Playoff Spot
It was a bittersweet soccer weekend in Cary, with one local team falling at home and another locking in a postseason berth. Both matches had playoff implications and passionate crowds.
Weekend Highlights:
North Carolina Courage dropped a tough one at home, losing 3-1 to Racing Louisville FC in front of 7,218 fans, one of the biggest crowds in club history. Manaka Matsukubo scored her 10th regular season goal, hitting a major milestone as one of the league's youngest players to do so, but it wasn't enough to stop a strong night from Emma Sears, who netted two for Louisville.
Emma Sears opened and closed the scoring for Racing Louisville, with goals in the 46th and 79th minutes, while Kayla Fischer added one of her own. It was a rare home stumble for the Courage, who now sit at 7-9-7 on the season.
Natalie Jacobs made her first start for the Courage, adding fresh legs to a squad still fighting for a late-season surge.
In better news, North Carolina FC officially clinched a USL Championship playoff spot after Louisville City FC beat Indy Eleven 2–0. Now, NCFC turns its focus to earning a home playoff game when they host Phoenix Rising FC on Friday, October 10, during Pups at the Pitch night—a fan-favorite event for dog lovers and soccer fans alike.
Another exciting weekend in Cary shows we’ve got both grit and goals—bring on the playoffs and puppy night! 🐾⚽

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Italy is famously known for its distinctive boot-shaped geography, extending into the Mediterranean Sea from southern Europe. This iconic shape includes the mainland and several large islands, such as Sicily (the “football” being kicked by the “boot”) and Sardinia. Italy’s unique form makes it instantly recognizable on a map and reflects its rich history of coastal cities, maritime trade, and cultural connections throughout the Mediterranean region.
