What Public Good Really Means in Cary

A conversation between Councilmember Lori Bush and Town Manager Sean Stegall on Cary Matters explored the town’s approach to the “public good.” They explained that Cary’s services are designed to benefit everyone, from emergency response to clean water and green spaces, and are funded collectively rather than on a per-use basis.

Unlike private businesses, Cary’s government operates with a mission to serve residents equitably. Projects like sewer line installations and greenway expansions are implemented with the goal of improving community well-being, not profitability.

The leaders emphasized that civic participation—from volunteering to public meetings—is vital to Cary’s growth and cohesion. Everyone’s involvement, no matter how small, contributes to the town’s overall success.

By prioritizing inclusion and community welfare over financial returns, Cary sets itself apart as a town where residents’ well-being drives decision-making.

Fake NCDMV Texts Demanding Payment Target NC Residents

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is warning residents about a rise in fraudulent text message scams. These messages, which falsely claim to demand payment for tolls, fines, or fees, appear to originate from the NCDMV but are not legitimate.

Officials stress that the NCDMV does not request payment via text message under any circumstances. Residents receiving such texts are advised to delete them immediately and refrain from clicking on any links or sharing personal information.

To stay protected, residents should be cautious of any unsolicited text requesting money or personal details. Any suspicious messages should be reported to mobile carriers or the Federal Trade Commission. Individuals can also verify legitimate communication by contacting the NCDMV through official channels.

More information on identifying and avoiding phishing scams is available on the North Carolina Department of Justice website.

Note: This story was first published in June 2025 but remains relevant due to continued reports of similar scams.

Cary 311 Poll Reveals Mixed Experiences, Low Awareness

A Cary Spotlight reader poll revealed that while 40 percent of participants found the Cary 311 service helpful, many others had never used it or experienced difficulties. The service, designed as a one-stop contact point for non-emergency town matters, received mixed reviews based on personal experiences.

A notable share of voters said they were unaware of Cary 311, suggesting more public education is needed to raise awareness. Others noted specific problems, such as technical access issues or lack of response to email submissions. A few also reported being mistakenly connected to other cities.

Despite the challenges, Cary 311 remains a valued resource for many residents. The Town offers access via phone, email, online, and mobile app, and supports a wide range of services including reporting infrastructure issues, asking about utilities, and requesting permits. The feedback underscores opportunities for improvement in communication, accessibility, and follow-up.
