Wake County Begins Planning for Trash Disposal Beyond 2040

Wake County is preparing for a future without the South Wake Landfill, which is expected to be full between 2040 and 2045. The landfill has served the area since 2008, but officials are now exploring alternatives due to its limited lifespan and the county’s ongoing growth.

A current study is assessing several paths forward, including sending trash to landfills in nearby counties or investing in waste-to-energy technology. County leaders acknowledge that securing a large new landfill site within Wake may not be realistic given space and development constraints.

The idea of converting waste into energy is gaining attention, especially with increasing demands from new infrastructure like data centers. Officials stress the need for solutions that serve both current and future community needs, potentially involving regional cooperation.

Residents will have the opportunity to weigh in, as public engagement efforts are scheduled to launch soon. Read Full Report

Town Council Meeting to Address Major Housing and Mixed-Use Projects

Cary’s next Town Council meeting on September 11 will cover significant land-use and governance decisions. A final vote is expected on the annexation and rezoning of nearly 49 acres at Yates Store Road and New Hope Church Road. If approved, the land would be used for new residential development including single-family homes and townhouses.

The Council is also set to confirm new members to its advisory boards, with appointments effective October 1. An amendment to increase the size of the Senior Advisory Board will also be considered.

Another key item is a rezoning proposal for Alston Commons, a mixed-use project near NC 55. The plan includes hundreds of apartments, office space, commercial facilities, and commitments to affordable housing and sustainability features.

While there are no public hearings this session, residents can engage in the "Public Speaks Out" portion of the meeting. Streaming will be available across multiple platforms.

With Cary Town Council set to vote on major development projects like Yates Store Road and Alston Commons, we want to hear from you. Which of the following should be Cary’s top priority when approving new developments?

Courage Draw in Rainy Thriller, NCFC Falls on the Road

It was a wet and wild weekend for Cary’s pro soccer teams, as both the NC Courage and North Carolina FC battled the elements and late-game drama. Here’s how the action shook out at home and on the road.

Weekend Highlights:

  • North Carolina Courage drew the Utah Royals 1-1 on Saturday after a weather delay and a flurry of late goals. Jaedyn Shaw put the Courage ahead with an 89th-minute penalty, but Utah answered in stoppage time to split the points.

  • Goalkeeper Marisa Jordan made her first-ever NWSL regular season start, stepping up with four key saves for the Courage in a soggy, stop-and-start match at WakeMed Soccer Park.

  • North Carolina FC fell 2-1 at Lexington SC on Friday night despite a late spark from Rodrigo Da Costa, who scored in the 87th minute after a slick setup by Thomas Roberts, notching his first assist for the club.

  • Coach John Bradford praised his team's second-half push, but admitted giving up a goal right before halftime “was frustrating” and called on his squad to “capitalize on chances” in upcoming home games.

Rain or shine, Cary’s soccer scene keeps delivering drama—and there’s plenty more to come next weekend at WakeMed!

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Vatican City is the smallest country in Europe—and the world—by both population and area. With fewer than 800 residents, it is an independent city-state entirely surrounded by Rome, Italy. Vatican City serves as the spiritual and administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church and is the official residence of the Pope. Despite its tiny size of just 44 hectares (110 acres), it houses globally significant sites such as St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums.
