Sinkhole Closes Olive Chapel Road in Apex Through November

Flood damage in Apex has led to a major road closure after a sinkhole formed along Olive Chapel Road, a key route in the area. The incident occurred Wednesday after heavy rain caused Beaver Creek to overflow, eroding the ground beneath the road and resulting in a significant collapse.

Emergency crews responded quickly, and assessments by state and local officials are now underway. Although thousands of vehicles use the road daily, authorities say traffic was not a factor in the collapse.

The closure, between Ashley Downs Drive and Patterson Grove Road, is expected to last until November 26. Residents and commuters are being advised to seek alternate routes as the area undergoes extensive repairs.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of local infrastructure to severe weather, and officials are continuing to monitor the site to ensure safety and progress on repairs.

Town of Cary Advises Vigilance for Storm Aftermath

Rainy conditions are expected to continue in Cary over the next few days. Once the weather begins to improve, residents are encouraged to watch for lingering storm debris and possible flooding in local parks and greenways.

To report storm-related debris on public property, residents can contact 311 through several channels:

1,400-Pound Great White Shark Tracked Near NC Coast

A massive great white shark named Breton has been tracked off North Carolina’s coast by ocean research group OCEARCH. Weighing 1,437 pounds and measuring over 13 feet long, Breton is one of many sharks being monitored through high-tech tags that record genetic, health, and behavioral data.

OCEARCH’s mission is to advance global shark conservation through data-driven research. It recently tagged its largest male white shark ever, further expanding its knowledge of shark populations in the Atlantic. The group’s research provides vital information on shark migration, breeding, and feeding behavior.

Since launching in 2007, OCEARCH has led nearly 50 research expeditions and partnered with over 90 research institutions worldwide. Their work has become especially focused on the western North Atlantic, a key habitat for white sharks.

This growing dataset helps scientists and conservationists understand the environmental role of great whites and the areas critical to their survival, informing future protections for these apex predators. Read Full Story
