First West Nile Case in North Carolina
North Carolina health officials have confirmed the state’s first human case of West Nile virus in 2025, detected in a Durham County resident. Mosquitoes carrying the virus were also identified in Pitt County, signaling the seasonal rise of West Nile activity.
The virus is transmitted through mosquito bites, with most infected individuals experiencing no symptoms. Mild cases may involve fever, headaches, or muscle aches, while severe infections can lead to neurological conditions like meningitis or encephalitis. There is no specific treatment, though supportive care in hospitals can manage serious complications.
Several mosquito species in North Carolina can transmit West Nile, most notably the Asian tiger mosquito. These insects thrive in small collections of stagnant water around homes, including buckets, tires, gutters, and birdbaths. State health experts recommend a “tip and toss” approach to eliminate breeding sites and advise using EPA-approved insect repellents for personal protection.
As of late July, the CDC has reported 98 cases of West Nile virus nationwide across 23 states, including neighboring regions. Officials emphasize the importance of preventive measures to limit mosquito exposure during peak summer months.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Green. While the Coca-Cola Company is strongly associated with the color red, the original Coca-Cola bottles were a distinct green color. This green hue wasn't a deliberate branding choice, but rather a result of the natural minerals present in the sand used to make the glass. The specific green shade, known as "German Green" or later "Georgia Green," was a byproduct of the sand sourced from Putnam County, Indiana, where the Root Glass Company had a plant. This green glass became synonymous with the Coca-Cola bottle, even though the drink itself was always a dark caramel color.
