Could Your Sleep Be Warning You About Alzheimer’s?

A study published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia suggests that delayed entry into REM sleep may be associated with biological markers of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers studied 123 participants with varying cognitive conditions and found those with slower transitions into REM sleep were more likely to exhibit signs linked to Alzheimer’s.

While the connection between sleep and Alzheimer’s is not yet fully understood, accumulating research points to poor sleep as a possible contributing factor to cognitive decline. This supports broader recommendations for prioritizing good sleep hygiene and overall health maintenance to potentially reduce Alzheimer’s risk.

REM sleep, which plays a key role in memory and cognitive function, cannot be directly controlled, but improving general sleep quality is considered beneficial. Strategies include sticking to regular sleep schedules, reducing stimulant use, and maintaining physical activity.

The CDC emphasizes additional preventive steps like managing chronic conditions, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and treating hearing loss. People with persistent sleep problems are encouraged to seek medical advice for targeted intervention. Read full story
