Explore Chapel Hill's Franklin Street

Chapel Hill's Franklin Street offers the perfect day trip destination just an hour from Cary, where you can stroll down one of North Carolina's most famous main streets. This historic thoroughfare has been the heart of social life for the University of North Carolina and the town of Chapel Hill since the 1790s, creating an experience that's both charming and entertaining for visitors of all ages.

Named after Benjamin Franklin in the 1790s, this three-mile stretch has been Chapel Hill's main street since the University's founding. With over 95 cafes, restaurants and bars (75% locally owned), Franklin Street offers everything from the historic Carolina Coffee Shop (serving since 1922) to modern spots like Que Chula Craft Tacos and Pho Happiness Vietnamese restaurant.

The street comes alive with unique shops and longtime favorites. Five businesses have operated for more than 50 years, including Julian's clothing store and Sutton's Drug Store with its traditional soda fountain unchanged since 1923. You can catch a movie at the Varsity Theatre, browse books at Epilogue Books Chocolate Brews, or explore music history at SchoolKids Records. The proximity to UNC's campus puts you steps away from the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center and Ackland Art Museum.

Franklin Street hosts regular festivals and events throughout the year, including vintage markets, craft markets, the annual Community Holiday Parade, and Festifall Arts Markets. The street is famous for its Halloween celebration and victory celebrations when the Tar Heels win championships. Free and low-cost guided walking tours are available throughout the year, and you'll discover colorful murals adorning many downtown buildings as you explore.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Pet corn snakes typically live between 15 to 20 years when cared for properly in captivity. Their long lifespan, combined with their docile nature and relatively simple care requirements, makes them a popular choice for beginner reptile owners. With consistent feeding, proper habitat conditions, and regular handling, these snakes can thrive for decades.
