Wake County Adds Real-Time Flood Monitoring at Nine Local Dams
This summer, Wake County will begin installing real-time water level monitoring systems at nine dams within the Crabtree Creek Watershed. These dams, constructed by the federal government in the 1970s and 1980s, are currently managed by the Wake County General Services Administration and have relied on manual inspections for decades.
Under a five-year agreement, the U.S. Geological Survey will install, maintain, and calibrate the new monitoring hardware. The technology will provide continuous data on water levels, supporting safer and more efficient dam operations. Public access to this data will also be made available online, improving transparency and community awareness.
The real-time monitoring system will be integrated with the City of Raleigh’s Flood Early Warning System to enhance flood forecasting and emergency response. The nine dams receiving upgrades include sites such as Bond Lake, Shelley Lake, and Lake Lynn, among others. Lake Crabtree remains the only dam in the network currently equipped with active monitoring. Read Full Story

One Dead, Two Missing Amid Dangerous Conditions at Jordan Lake
Sandra Portnoy Hirschman, 83, died late Sunday night after her vehicle was carried off a flooded roadway in Chatham County. Authorities said Hirschman was driving north on Farrington Point Road when her Audi A4 entered high waters and was swept about 100 feet from the roadway. Responding emergency crews found her deceased inside the submerged car. She was the only occupant.
The incident occurred during a period of intense rainfall and strong winds tied to a tropical depression affecting the region. Local officials highlighted the dangerous conditions, especially near Jordan Lake, where water levels were high and debris posed additional risks to those on or near the water. They urged residents to avoid flooded roads and waterways while recovery and road repair efforts continue.
The tragedy coincides with another emergency at Jordan Lake, where two kayakers were reported missing on Sunday afternoon. Search efforts remain ongoing, and authorities continue to stress caution around the lake as conditions remain hazardous.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Delta waves are the slowest and most powerful brainwaves, and they are primarily associated with deep, restorative sleep—specifically during stages 3 and 4 of non-REM sleep. These low-frequency waves (0.5 to 4 Hz) are crucial for healing and regeneration, helping to refresh both the body and the brain. A lack of delta wave activity can lead to poor sleep quality and reduced mental performance.
