Cary’s Commitment to Honoring Heroes, Protecting Children

Credit: Downtown Cary Park
During National Police Week, observed May 11–17, the Town of Cary joins communities across the country in honoring the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. As part of the observance, both Downtown Cary Park and the Cary Arts Center will be lit in blue throughout the week: a visual expression known as the “Blue Light of Support.”
The tradition dates back to President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and serves as a powerful reminder of the men and women who protect their communities at great personal risk.
The color blue has long symbolized peace, duty, and vigilance—values that define the role of law enforcement. In Cary, this tribute is not only a moment of reflection but also a continuation of the town’s broader commitment to public safety. While the lights shine in remembrance, the people behind the uniform continue to serve in ways both seen and unseen—often without recognition, but never without impact.
One example of this ongoing service is Cary’s free Child Seat Checking Station, offered every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 155 Wilkinson Avenue, just behind Cary Town Hall. Staffed by trained volunteers from the Citizens Assisting Police (CAP) team, the station ensures that parents and caregivers have properly installed and secure car seats—an often-overlooked detail that can be critical in an emergency. It’s a quiet but vital act of prevention, echoing the same mission that Police Week seeks to honor: protecting lives, one family at a time. Read Original Post

Wake Schools Reevaluate Student Laptop Program Amid Budget Strains
Wake County Public Schools is taking a fresh look at its one-to-one student laptop program, first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to support remote learning. The district currently provides each of its 160,000 students with a Chromebook, but the rising costs of maintaining the program—from device replacements to software and support—have prompted leaders to consider whether the model is financially sustainable moving forward.
The district will continue with the current device program through the 2024–2025 school year while it develops a long-term technology plan. That plan, expected to guide decisions beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, will evaluate how to balance digital access with educational goals and budget realities. Officials say the goal is to create a model that supports student learning while being operationally and financially manageable over time. Read Full Report

Cary Puts Community in Drive with Wheels on Academy Festival

Cary’s Town Hall campus will host one of the town’s most anticipated community events on Saturday, May 17: Wheels on Academy. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event brings together car lovers, families, and curious visitors for a showcase that spans generations of design and technology. The open car show invites all makes and models, from antique classics to today’s sleek EVs, offering a full spectrum of automotive innovation.
This year’s event highlights the growing role of electric vehicles, with an expanded EV showcase that includes Cary’s municipal green fleet and private vehicles from the community. Visitors can explore the shift toward sustainability while getting up close to vehicles that are redefining how we move. Meanwhile, the ever-popular Touch-A-Truck display lets children climb aboard fire trucks and public safety vehicles, connecting them to the people and machines that keep Cary running.
Live music will set the tone throughout the day, with Vertigo performing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Courtyard Lounge. Food trucks will be on-site offering everything from savory snacks to sweet treats, making it easy for families to spend the day enjoying all the event has to offer. Free and open to all ages, Wheels on Academy blends nostalgia, community pride, and a forward-looking lens into a high-octane Saturday tradition.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
False — snakes do not unhinge their jaws to eat large prey. Instead, they have highly flexible ligaments that connect the lower jawbones, allowing them to stretch widely around prey much larger than their head. Each side of the jaw can move independently, which helps them "walk" their mouths over the prey item. This unique anatomy enables snakes to swallow animals whole without dislocating or unhinging anything.
