Cary’s Sach Akella Heads to National Spelling Bee
The Scripps National Spelling Bee returns this May, and Cary will be in the mix thanks to Mills Park Middle School student Sach Akella, one of eight spellers representing North Carolina. Akella joins six other students from the Triangle and surrounding areas in heading to National Harbor, where preliminary rounds begin on May 27.
This year’s Bee introduces a significant format change: the removal of the timed “spell-off” that was used to speed up results when broadcasts neared their end. Instead, judges now have discretion to allow the final rounds to continue into overtime if needed, a move that reflects the Bee’s growing emphasis on fairness over flash.
The other North Carolina spellers hail from Raleigh, Durham, Clayton, Fayetteville, and Sanford, making the 2024 Bee a particularly strong showing for central North Carolina. For families and educators in Cary, Akella’s appearance offers a point of pride — and perhaps a little spelling fever of their own.

Snakebite Season Arrives in NC:
What to Know and What Not to Do
Video Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m9NIqKqHiI
As temperatures rise, North Carolinians face a seasonal uptick in snakebites, particularly from copperheads, which are widespread across the state. Duke Health treats over 100 cases annually, with the majority occurring between now and October. Bites often happen during routine activities in backyards, wooded trails, or areas with dense vegetation.
The standard response — immediate transport to an emergency department for antivenom — remains critical, as treatment delays increase the risk of complications. Experts stress that common folk remedies, such as cutting, sucking, icing, or tying off the wound, are not only ineffective but may actually cause harm.
A team at Duke is also working on a potential breakthrough: an oral treatment that could be administered earlier, even before hospital arrival. The pill could offer a new layer of protection in a region where snakes are a regular part of outdoor life.
Whether walking the dog at dusk or hiking through Wake County trails, residents are encouraged to tread carefully, especially near logs, leaf litter, or tall grass — and to take swift action if bitten.
Just curious…
With copperheads active and sightings on the rise, we’re curious — what’s your awareness level?

‘Leave the Trees’: Cary Residents Share Vision for Future Parks
As Wake County prepares its long-range parks and recreation Master Plan, Cary Spotlight invited readers to share their priorities for the future.
With 31 votes cast (Cary Spotlight Issue #561 Reader Poll), two top responses tied: more walking and biking trails, and more natural areas and quiet escapes. These preferences suggest that locals want a balance between active recreation and the preservation of tranquil, undeveloped land.
Several readers advocated for greenways and trail expansions, often emphasizing safety. One reader called for separating pedestrian and bike traffic to reduce the risk of collisions. At the same time, a large share of voters voiced concern about overdevelopment, with responses urging officials to “leave the trees” and protect any remaining natural space.
Though less popular in the poll, a handful of residents suggested amenities like amphitheaters, shaded play areas, and more sports fields—especially for youth soccer and baseball. One participant said, “The playground equipment gets too hot for the kids to safely use,” highlighting a need for more shaded structures.
As community planning events begin across the county, it’s clear that residents care deeply about the future of their outdoor spaces—and want a voice in shaping what comes next.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
The liver is the only human organ capable of fully regenerating itself, even if up to 75% of it is surgically removed. This incredible ability allows it to restore both size and function within weeks, making liver transplants and donations possible. The regeneration process doesn’t involve growing a brand-new liver, but rather the remaining cells rapidly multiplying to replace lost tissue—an evolutionary trait likely linked to the liver’s critical role in detoxification and metabolism.
