Feeling Sick? Why Symptoms May Matter More Than Your Temperature
For decades, 98.6°F has been regarded as the standard for normal body temperature, but evolving research suggests this benchmark may no longer be accurate. The original figure was established in the mid-1800s by German physician Dr. Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich, who studied temperature readings from thousands of individuals. However, modern studies indicate that the average body temperature has steadily declined, with recent data placing it closer to 97.9°F.
This shift is believed to be linked to longer life expectancy, improved healthcare, and reduced exposure to infections that historically kept immune systems in a heightened state. Body temperature can also vary based on age, sex, weight, height, and time of day, making it difficult to rely on a single number as the definitive measure of health.
While 100°F is commonly used as a fever threshold, experts caution that symptoms matter more than temperature alone. Older adults, for example, may not develop high fevers even when seriously ill. As respiratory illnesses such as flu and COVID-19 continue to spread, health officials recommend staying home when sick, practicing good hygiene, and getting vaccinated to minimize severe complications.
Understanding personal health baselines, rather than relying on an outdated temperature standard, may be key to recognizing illness and seeking appropriate care.
Just curious…
With research suggesting that normal body temperature may be lower than 98.6°F, we’re curious—how do you determine if you’re running a fever?
100-Year-Old Runner and 101-Year-Old Walker Challenge Stereotypes About Aging

Margaret Johnson and Cécile Nyiti are living proof that age does not define ability. These two centenarian athletes—one from the United States and the other from Ghana—have spent years proving that physical activity and ambition have no expiration date.
Margaret, a 100-year-old runner from Denver, discovered her love for running at 70. Over the years, she has competed in numerous senior sporting events, using her journey to encourage others to embrace movement at any stage of life. At the 2024 National Senior Games, she once again took to the track, demonstrating the endurance and determination that have made her a beloved figure in senior athletics.
Meanwhile, in Ghana, 101-year-old Cécile Nyiti has made her mark in distance walking. In 2022, she completed the Accra Marathon’s 5K walk, becoming the event’s oldest participant. Her participation was more than just a personal achievement—it was a statement that aging does not have to mean slowing down.
Both women embody the power of resilience, dedication, and lifelong passion for staying active. Their influence extends beyond sports, offering an inspiring lesson: it is never too late to challenge yourself, redefine limits, and live with purpose.
Their journeys continue to inspire those who may feel discouraged by aging, reminding us all that the best chapters of life are often the ones we choose to keep writing. Read Full Story

Carrie Fisher, renowned for her iconic role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars series, was also a passionate mental health advocate. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 24, she courageously shared her personal struggles with both the disorder and addiction. Through her writings, such as the semi-autobiographical novel "Postcards from the Edge," and public appearances, Fisher worked tirelessly to destigmatize mental illness and encourage open conversations.
