Transforming Highway 55: Cary’s $500M Development Moves Forward
The $500 million Alston Yards project has cleared key hurdles in Cary, with Heritage Capital Partners securing 26.29 acres along Highway 55 for $11.135 million. The 41.38-acre mixed-use development has also received rezoning approvals, allowing for a diverse mix of residential, commercial, and office spaces.
Construction is set to begin in early 2026, with the first phase expected in mid-2027 and full completion in 2031. Once finished, Alston Yards will include:
950 apartments ranging from studios to three-bedroom units.
60,000 square feet of retail space, with an emphasis on food, beverage, and specialty goods.
200,000 square feet of office space, starting with spec suites and expanding into corporate offices.
A 200-room hotel offering additional accommodations for the area.
Designed to integrate urban living with natural surroundings, Alston Yards will feature a walkable main street, gathering spaces, greenway trails, and open areas. Parking will be primarily housed in five structured garages, two of which will be wrapped by apartment buildings, while street-style parking will serve retail visitors.
The development is part of a broader transformation of the Highway 55 corridor, which also includes Alston Commons, a nearby project bringing 625 multifamily units, medical office space, and commercial developments, as well as new additions at Alston Town Center and Parkside Town Commons, including restaurants, medical offices, and a six-story Marriott hotel.
With its strategic location near Apple’s planned RTP campus, Alston Yards is set to become a highly desirable hub for residential, business, and commercial growth in Cary. Read Full Report
With the Alston Yards project moving forward, Cary is set to gain new residential, retail, and office spaces. Which part of the development are you most looking forward to?

Cary Spotlight Poll Shows Strong Support for Childhood Vaccinations
A recent Cary Spotlight reader poll found overwhelming support for childhood vaccinations, with nearly 90% of respondents viewing immunization as a critical public health measure. The results reflect a strong consensus that vaccines are essential in preventing disease and protecting communities, even as a small percentage expressed concerns or preferred personal choice.
Among the 37 respondents, the vast majority—33 individuals (89.19%)—agreed that vaccines play a vital role in public health. A small group, three respondents, believed vaccination should remain a personal choice without mandates, while one respondent supported vaccines but had questions about their safety and necessity. Notably, no respondents considered childhood vaccination to be unimportant.
The discussion surrounding vaccinations remains a complex and sometimes divisive issue. Some readers emphasized the broader societal impact of immunization, noting that preventable diseases like measles can have severe, sometimes fatal consequences, particularly for young children and vulnerable individuals. Others pointed out the risk of declining vaccination rates leading to outbreaks, urging a fact-based approach informed by organizations like the NIH and CDC.
As vaccination policies continue to be debated across the country, the results from this poll reinforce a prevailing belief among Cary residents: immunization remains a cornerstone of public health, ensuring the well-being of not just individuals but the community as a whole.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 at the age of 35 for his leadership in the Civil Rights Movement and his commitment to nonviolent resistance against racial injustice. As a key figure in the fight for equality, he led pivotal events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington, where he delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech.
