Measles Cases Surge: Should You Get a Booster Shot?

A resurgence of measles cases across the U.S. has renewed concerns about vaccination rates and immunity levels. While once considered eliminated in the U.S., measles has reappeared in states like Texas, Georgia, and New Mexico, with low vaccination rates fueling outbreaks.

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses, spreading through the air and causing fever, cough, red eyes, and a characteristic rash. Complications can be severe, leading to pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death. Before the measles vaccine was introduced in 1963, millions of people worldwide died each year from the disease.

The Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine) is highly effective, with two doses providing 97% protection. The CDC recommends that all children receive their first dose at 12-15 months and a second dose around age four. Adults who are unsure of their vaccination history can request a titer test, which measures antibody levels to determine immunity.

For those born between 1963 and 1968, there is a chance they received an early version of the vaccine that was less effective. In such cases, the CDC recommends getting at least one dose of the current MMR vaccine. Additionally, people exposed to measles can receive an MMR shot within 72 hours to reduce symptoms.

The recent rise in cases is linked to a decline in childhood vaccination rates, with national immunization levels falling below the 95% needed for herd immunity. If trends continue, public health officials warn that measles outbreaks could become more frequent and severe.

What is Herd Immunity? Herd immunity occurs when a large percentage of a population becomes immune to a disease, either through vaccination or prior infection, making it difficult for the illness to spread. When enough people are immune, the virus has fewer opportunities to infect new hosts, indirectly protecting those who are not immune, such as infants, the elderly, or individuals with weakened immune systems.

For highly contagious diseases like measles, achieving herd immunity requires at least 95% of the population to be vaccinated. When vaccination rates drop below this threshold, outbreaks become more likely because there aren’t enough immune individuals to stop the virus from spreading.

Herd immunity is a key goal of public health efforts, as it helps prevent widespread disease, reduces hospitalizations, and protects the most vulnerable members of society.
