Cary Spotlight Readers Got It Right: Eagles Crush Chiefs to Win Super Bowl LIX

The Philadelphia Eagles delivered a commanding 40–22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, securing their second championship in franchise history and preventing the Chiefs from making history with a three-peat. The Eagles took control early, leading 24–0 by halftime, as Jalen Hurts rushed for a touchdown and Cooper DeJean returned an interception for a score.

Hurts, named Super Bowl MVP, threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns, adding another 72 yards on the ground, guiding Philadelphia’s offense with precision. Meanwhile, the Eagles’ defense overwhelmed Patrick Mahomes, limiting him to just 33 passing yards in the first half and sacking him six times throughout the game.

Though the Chiefs staged a late push, scoring on passes to Xavier Worthy and DeAndre Hopkins, the Eagles’ defense held firm, ensuring there would be no dramatic comeback.

According to last week’s Cary Spotlight Reader Poll, the Philadelphia Eagles were the fan-favorite, leading with 22 out of 69 votes (31.88%). The Chiefs had strong support as well, but many readers either just wanted a good game or weren’t planning to watch. In the end, Eagles fans got exactly what they hoped for—a dominant performance.

Flu Season Hits Hard: Emergency Rooms See Overnight Waits

Emergency rooms across North Carolina are experiencing significant delays as a severe flu season leads to a surge in hospital visits. At WakeMed, multiple emergency departments reported estimated wait times exceeding an hour, with some patients waiting overnight before being admitted. Similar trends are being observed at UNC Health, where flu and respiratory illnesses account for one in five ER visits.

According to health officials, hospitals typically operate at or near capacity year-round, so any spike in flu cases puts additional strain on emergency services. While critical cases are prioritized, those with milder symptoms may face longer wait times. Flu-related ER visits in North Carolina have more than doubled compared to typical seasonal averages, marking the worst outbreak since 2009.

Experts emphasize that emergency care remains available, but they encourage preventive measures to ease hospital congestion. Patients are advised to stay home if sick, wear masks while recovering, and frequently wash their hands. Those at higher risk, such as young children and older adults, should seek immediate medical attention if experiencing severe flu symptoms.

Vaccination remains a key defense, and those who have not yet received a flu shot are encouraged to do so. For individuals needing emergency care, hospitals recommend checking online wait times (at WakeMed and UNC Health) before heading to the ER. As flu cases continue to rise, proactive prevention may be the best way to avoid long hospital delays. Read Full Report

Cary Residents Unaware of Unclaimed Property Process

A recent Cary Spotlight Reader Poll exposed a major gap in public awareness: 93.48% of respondents had no idea Cary had an unclaimed property process. This revelation comes just as the deadline to claim lost or seized items from the Cary Police Department has expired, leaving those items to be auctioned, donated, or disposed of.

As of February 1, 2025, remaining property—including bicycles, tools, electronics, jewelry, and firearms—will move to the next phase. Firearms will undergo a separate disposal process, bicycles will be donated to a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and all other items will be listed in an online auction.

For those who missed the deadline, the only option left is to monitor Cary’s public notices for auction details. The poll results suggest that the town may need to improve its outreach efforts to ensure residents are aware of opportunities to claim lost property in the future.

To stay updated, residents can check Cary’s public notices online and direct questions to the Cary Police Department’s Evidence Section at (919) 319-4516.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇

Leonard C. Bailey, an African-American inventor and entrepreneur, was granted U.S. Patent 629,286 on July 18, 1899, for a folding bed designed for easy storage and portability. His innovative design was adopted by the U.S. Army for use in military camps, providing a practical solution for sleeping arrangements in limited spaces. Bailey's invention laid the groundwork for modern foldable beds, commonly known today as sofa beds or hide-a-beds.
