The Caregivers’ Burden: Facing the Wind Explores Lewy Body Dementia

Facing the Wind, a new documentary, delves into the emotional and psychological impact of Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) on caregivers. Focusing on the experiences of Linda Szypula and Carla Preyer, the film reveals the complexities of caring for loved ones afflicted with the same disease that plagued Robin Williams before his death. Unlike Alzheimer's, LBD causes agitation, hallucinations, depression, and cognitive and motor decline, adding to the challenge of caregiving.

The documentary portrays the day-to-day struggles of Linda and Carla. Carla remains housebound with her husband, Patrick, due to his growing agitation, yet they share an intimate vow renewal at home. Linda and her husband, Jim, attempt a road trip, only to be cut short by Jim's paralyzing fear.

The film also captures a brief escape for the women, when they join fellow caregivers on a support group getaway, offering a small reprieve from their grief and fatigue. Directed by Deirdre Fishel, Facing the Wind will premiere at DOC NYC, the nation’s largest documentary festival, and it is available for online streaming (from Nov. 21 until Dec. 1). Online Resources That Lighten
the Load for Caregivers

In the often overwhelming world of caregiving, finding reliable support and information is crucial. The internet offers a wealth of resources that can make a significant difference for caregivers, whether they are navigating the challenges of dementia, managing daily care routines, or simply looking for a sense of community.

The Alzheimer’s Association stands out as a critical resource, offering a 24/7 helpline, local support groups, and a vast collection of tips designed specifically for those caring for loved ones with dementia. Similarly, the Family Caregiver Alliance (FCA) provides educational webinars, caregiver stories, and a personalized resource center to address various caregiving needs.

AARP’s caregiving hub addresses practical concerns, from legal and financial advice to self-care, supported by a helpline that guides caregivers through difficult decisions. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) also delivers comprehensive guidance, focusing on older adults’ care, managing behaviors, and planning for future needs.

For those needing a private space to keep family and friends informed, CaringBridge offers a free, supportive platform. Meanwhile, the Caregiver Action Network (CAN) connects caregivers with a help desk and educational content tailored to specific situations.

Online communities like The Caregiver Space and Well Spouse Association bring a human touch to caregiving, offering peer support through forums and local groups. Daily Caring provides stress-management tips, dementia care advice, and guidance on accessing essential services, and social media groups add another layer of connection, creating a space for caregivers to share and learn from each other.

The world of caregiving is tough, but these resources offer a beacon of hope, making the load a little lighter for those who give so much of themselves to care for others.

Four Questions That Changed Everything: How Corey Found Freedom from Anger

When Corey first stepped into a session, his world was a whirlpool of rage and pain. Two years prior, his partner, Lyle, abruptly packed up and vanished while Corey was at work. Corey soon discovered the shocking truth: Lyle had been involved in a secret relationship with a close friend and the two had left the state together. The betrayal left Corey in a relentless loop of anger and desire for revenge, rendering his daily life almost unmanageable.

Struggling to move forward, Corey attempted numerous strategies to ease his distress. The breakthrough came from a method developed by Byron Katie, a self-inquiry process called “The Work.” Katie’s journey had been marked by a deep depression that kept her confined to bed for days. In a moment of realization, she saw that her suffering came not from external circumstances but from her thoughts about them. This understanding inspired “The Work,” a structured approach to challenge painful beliefs.

The core of “The Work” lies in four liberating questions that prompt self-reflection:

  1. Is it true?

  2. Can you absolutely know that it’s true?

  3. How do you react when you believe that thought?

  4. Who would you be without the thought?

Participants are then asked to generate a “turnaround”—an opposite statement that reframes their beliefs, offering insights into other perspectives. For example, “He doesn’t understand me” might be reconsidered as “I don’t understand him” or “I don’t understand myself.”

This method functions like self-guided cognitive therapy, empowering many to unshackle themselves from persistent negative thoughts. An appealing aspect of “The Work” is its accessibility. With minimal instruction, people often become proficient in using it to improve their emotional well-being. Those interested can find detailed resources and instructions on Katie’s website, a helpful first step for anyone eager to give this method a try. Read Full Report
