15-Year-Old Shot, 17-Year-Old Arrested in Cary Incident

A shooting involving two teenagers occurred in Cary on Wednesday afternoon near Cary Towne Boulevard and Walnut Street. The 15-year-old victim, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was shot in the leg or groin area. Police took a 17-year-old suspect into custody at the scene and recovered two firearms. Authorities believe the victim and suspect knew each other, suggesting the shooting was not random.

The initial 911 report described an active shooter near a bustling shopping area with restaurants, sparking concern and prompting lockdowns at three local schools—Cary High, East Cary Magnet Middle, and Adams Elementary. Videos circulating on social media show the altercation moving from a sub shop to the street, accompanied by the sound of gunfire.

Though the scene was secured quickly, Walnut Street remained closed through the evening for public safety. Police have assured the community there is no ongoing threat, but additional officers will be present at Cary High School as a precaution.

The investigation continues, and anyone with information is asked to contact Cary CrimeStoppers at (919) 460-4636. Read Full Report.

Eight-Week Bridge Closure Set for Falls of Neuse Road

Falls of Neuse Road in North Raleigh will face phased closures over the next two months as the city undertakes bridge repairs beginning this Friday.

The project, which aims to smooth out bumps at the bridge transitions, will first close the northbound lanes between Old Wake Forest Road and Wakefield Pines Drive for four weeks, followed by a similar closure on the southbound side. With roughly 26,000 drivers using the route daily, the city has provided detour options through Old Falls of Neuse Road and Wakefield Pines Drive. Capital Boulevard also offers an alternative for those hoping to avoid both the bridge work and a nearby widening project.

The bridge repairs, estimated to cost $604,000, are expected to finish by December 20. Although the city acknowledges that the overlapping construction projects could add to traffic congestion, officials believe the long-term benefits will outweigh the temporary inconvenience. The larger road-widening project on Falls of Neuse, located about 2.5 miles south of the bridges, is set to conclude in September 2025. Read Full Report

N.C. State’s Grayson McCall Ends Football Career at 23

Grayson McCall, quarterback for N.C. State, has decided to retire from football at the age of 23 after sustaining another concussion during a game against Wake Forest on October 5. McCall’s retirement follows a series of head injuries throughout his career, including two concussions this season alone. During the October game, McCall was hit by two defenders, causing him to fumble as his helmet came off. The injury ended his season prematurely, and after consulting with brain specialists and family, McCall concluded that continuing to play posed too great a risk.

McCall’s football journey was marked by significant success, particularly during his time at Coastal Carolina, where he earned three Sun Belt Player of the Year awards and threw for over 10,000 yards and 91 touchdowns. However, his decision to step away reflects growing awareness of the dangers of repeated concussions, which are linked to long-term neurological conditions such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

As football grapples with the challenge of protecting players while preserving the game’s intensity, McCall’s retirement adds to the ongoing dialogue about the physical risks athletes face, even as protocols evolve to enhance player safety. Read Full Report

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇

Michelangelo, the renowned Italian artist and architect, is credited with designing the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, one of the most iconic structures in the world. Although he took over the project in 1546 at the age of 71, Michelangelo brought a visionary approach that greatly influenced the final design. His architectural work on the basilica solidified its status as a masterpiece of Renaissance art and architecture. The basilica remains a key site of pilgrimage and worship within the Roman Catholic Church.

For more information about St. Peter's Basilica and Michelangelo’s role in its design, you can visit the Vatican Museums' website.
