Cary Officers on the Front Lines of Hurricane Helene Recovery

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, Cary Police officers have been deployed to assist with recovery efforts in western North Carolina, particularly in Asheville and its surrounding areas. As part of the Wake County Task Force, nearly a dozen officers are helping ensure cleanup crews have safe, open streets to carry out their work. Alongside their traffic enforcement duties, officers like Sgt. Tim Hageter and Lt. Sheri Abraham have been deeply involved in the community, offering moments of relief to families and children affected by the storm.

Their work has been met with immense gratitude from local officers, many of whom have been given the chance to take a break and see their families for the first time since the disaster.

Cary officers, in turn, are gaining valuable experience in emergency management, which they plan to bring back to better prepare for future crises. The deployment highlights the importance of communities coming together in times of need, with Cary officers playing a key role in helping their western North Carolina neighbors recover from the devastation. NC State’s Poe Hall Under CDC Evaluation for Cancer Risk

NC State University’s Poe Hall is under scrutiny after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched an investigation into potential cancer clusters associated with the building.

Concerns were raised following the discovery of toxic polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) last fall, which are believed to be linked to cancer cases among employees and students. The CDC’s Health Hazard Evaluation program, working with North Carolina health officials, aims to determine the extent of exposure risks.

The university's own testing found the building’s HVAC system to be the primary source of the contamination. Meanwhile, attorney Bryan Brice, who represents numerous individuals affected by illnesses tied to Poe Hall, has been pressing for the investigation to include past employees and students.

Independent testing conducted in July further highlighted the potential dangers. As the investigation progresses, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is providing support. While NC State has yet to release a formal statement on the CDC’s evaluation, the university maintains its commitment to ensuring campus safety. Read Full Report

NC Veterans Day Parade Canceled for Second Year Amid New Safety Rules

The North Carolina Veterans Day Parade, a cherished event in Raleigh, has been canceled for the second consecutive year, with organizers citing difficulties complying with new city regulations.

The guidelines were introduced after the tragic accident in 2022 that claimed the life of an 11-year-old girl during a holiday parade. The updated rules, including a ban on motorized vehicles, posed particular challenges for veterans with limited mobility. Although the city recently adjusted its policy to allow vehicles with strict safety measures, the parade organizers concluded that meeting all the new requirements in time for this year's event was not feasible.

In place of the parade, the Wake County Council of Veterans will host a ceremony outside the North Carolina Capitol on November 9. The ceremony, which also took place last year, aims to honor veterans in a more intimate and meaningful setting, as organizers plan to make this year's event even bigger and more impactful. While the parade's absence is a disappointment, the community will still come together to pay tribute to those who have served. Read Full Report
