Wake County Schools Enhance Student Nutrition with Expanded Free Meals and Fresh Snacks

This school year, Wake County Public Schools have broadened their free meal service to encompass 41 schools, representing over 20% of the district.

This initiative ensures that students at these schools receive both breakfast and lunch at no cost, supported by federal funding. The move is part of a broader effort to eliminate economic barriers to healthy eating during school hours.

Furthermore, East Garner Elementary and six other schools are piloting a new program that supplements students' diets with fresh fruits and vegetables, funded by a specific grant aimed at enhancing student nutrition and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices from an early age.  Read Full Report

Rising Snake Bite Incidents in North Carolina Prompt Community Alert

Jessica Nelson, a resident of Raleigh, experienced a distressing series of events when she and her dog were bitten by copperhead snakes in separate incidents just weeks apart.

Both incidents occurred near the entrance of the Crabtree Creek Trail by Kiwanis Park, where Nelson was walking her dogs. After her own encounter, where a copperhead struck her multiple times, Nelson was left with a severely swollen ankle and an inability to walk without support. This incident was eerily similar to her dog's earlier bite, which required overnight emergency veterinary care.

These alarming encounters are part of a wider trend observed across North Carolina, where there has been a notable increase in snake bite incidents, reaching a peak not seen since 2020.

Talena Chavis, who runs NC Snake Catcher, reports that copperheads are being spotted in new areas, likely due to climatic changes that bring earlier and warmer springs. With NC Poison Control recording a high number of snake bites this year, the community is urged to remain vigilant, especially in wooded or grassy areas during the warmer months. Read Full Article

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Bees have a total of five eyes, consisting of two large compound eyes and three smaller ocelli eyes. The compound eyes are located on the sides of their heads and are made up of thousands of tiny lenses, allowing bees to see a wide range of colors and detect movement quickly, which is essential for flight and finding flowers.

The ocelli, located on the top of the head, are simpler eyes that help the bee maintain stability and navigate by detecting light intensity and changes in the environment.

For more detailed information about the anatomy of bees and their vision, you can visit a resource like the American Bee Journal, which provides insights into various aspects of bee biology and behavior.
