New Study Links 40% of Adult Cancer Cases to Modifiable Risk Factors
A new study from the American Cancer Society reveals that nearly half of adult cancer deaths in the United States could be prevented through lifestyle changes.
The study finds that about 40% of new cancer cases among adults aged 30 and older are linked to preventable risk factors, with smoking being the leading cause. Other significant risk factors include excess body weight, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, poor diet, and infections like HPV.
The research analyzed 18 modifiable risk factors across 30 types of cancer, connecting these factors to over 700,000 new cancer cases and more than 262,000 deaths in 2019.
Experts stress the importance of quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and other behavioral changes to reduce cancer risk. They also call for policies that promote healthier environments, particularly in disadvantaged areas. While creating healthy habits early is vital, it is never too late to make changes that can quickly reduce cancer risks and provide daily benefits. Read Full Report

Expert Advice on Healthy Aging: What You Should Know Now
Healthy aging is about living well, not just living long. By 2040, over 20% of Americans will be 65 or older, with more than half requiring long-term services.
Dr. John Batsis from UNC Chapel Hill highlights key elements for healthy aging: proper nutrition, regular physical activity, and social connections. A balanced diet focusing on fresh, home-cooked meals, regular exercise including both aerobic and resistance activities, and strong social networks are essential.
These practices benefit people at any age, helping maintain physical and mental health. Personalized plans that reflect individual priorities can support successful aging.
Strong social connections provide mental stimulation, a sense of purpose, and emotional support, which are crucial for overall well-being. Whether starting young or making changes later in life, adopting these healthy habits can make a significant difference in aging well. Read Full Interview

Deb Rasmussen's Mission: Protecting Families, Preserving Legacies
Rasmussen Law, founded by Deb Rasmussen, is redefining how Cary residents approach estate planning. Established in May 2024, Rasmussen Law, PLLC, offers more than just legal documents; it provides a personal touch that prioritizes comprehensive family care and legacy preservation.
"Most people donβt realize that just having a will in place does not protect their family from opening a probate proceeding when they die," explains Rasmussen. This public and often costly process can be avoided with proper advance planning. Rasmussen Law's unique approach ensures that clients not only receive necessary legal documents but also a thorough understanding of how the law interacts with their personal plans.
At the heart of Rasmussen Law is the Life & Legacy Planning Session. Here, clients learn about the implications of their current estate plans, or lack thereof, and are presented with options tailored to their familyβs needs and budget. For parents of minor children, the firm offers a Kids Protection Plan, which includes short-term guardian designations to prevent children from ever being left in the care of strangers.
Rasmussenβs dedication extends beyond legal documentation. The Family Care Plan ensures that estate plans remain up-to-date, and clients have continuous access to Rasmussen as their Personal Family Lawyer. This plan also includes an annual Family Legacy Interview, preserving family stories and values alongside legal preparations.
Deb Rasmussenβs journey to establishing her firm is as comprehensive as her services. Deb was an entrepreneur for 15 years in the personal publishing and scanning business, followed by a stint as a as a Real Estate and Estate Planning paralegal for Jonathan Richardson. It was her work as a paralegal that sparked her passion for estate planning. After law school, Deb clerked for Chief Judge Donna Stroud of the North Carolina Court of Appeals and then worked as an associate attorney for Paul Stam at Stam Law Firm in Apex.
These experiences have shaped her client-centered practice. Deb knows what causes estate plans to fail (even expensive ones with pretty binders) and her estate planning practice is intentionally designed to ensure that your estate plan works, keeping your family out of court and out of conflict. Deb also knows that family wealth is much more than your real estate, business, or personal property; it is also your family values, pictures, and stories. When you work with Deb you will be prepared, protected, and remembered.
Testimonials from satisfied clients reflect Rasmussen's impact. "Deb took a very complicated estate situation and made it seem easy," shares one client, highlighting the firm's ability to simplify and manage complex legal matters. Another praises, "We highly recommend Debbie Rasmussen... we have great confidence in her abilities and her integrity."

Deb graduated in Linguistics from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah with minors in Chinese and Japanese, and from Campbell Law School in Raleigh, North Carolina. She is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and the J. Reuben Clark Legal Society. She and her husband, Lars, love North Carolina and are the proud parents of four children. Deb enjoys people, swimming, Asian food, karaoke, and AI.
Looking ahead, Rasmussen Law is open for business now, and will have an official grand opening this fall with plans to further integrate into the community through initiatives like the Womenβs Collaborative Business Network.
Deb Rasmussenβs vision is clear: to offer not just legal services, but a lasting legacy of family security and peace of mind.
