Garner Middle Schoolers Gain Essential Life Skills in Police-Led Summer Program
The Garner Police Department’s Police Athletic and Activities League (PAAL) summer program is providing middle school students with vital life skills and leadership training.
The initiative, which invites twelve students from various middle schools each year, focuses on practical skills such as using a fire extinguisher, performing CPR, and changing a tire or oil. Recently revamped to emphasize community leadership, the program also educates students on North Carolina's history.
Through this hands-on training, students enhance their social and leadership abilities, preparing them to respond effectively in emergencies and be proactive community members.
The Garner Police Department views this program as an investment in the future, fostering responsibility and community awareness in the younger generation. Participants build valuable knowledge and develop mentorship relationships with police officers, which can inspire them and strengthen community bonds. Read full story

Central NC Braces for Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Today
Central North Carolina faces a Flood Watch today, with intermittent heavy rain expected throughout the day. The forecast predicts 1-2 inches of rain, with some areas possibly receiving over 3 inches. The region is at medium risk for flash flooding, necessitating caution and preparedness among residents.
While rain will not be continuous, its impact will be significant, especially when heavy downpours occur. Flash flooding can develop swiftly, posing dangers to motorists and pedestrians alike.
Authorities strongly advise against driving through flooded roads due to the risk of losing vehicle control or encountering hidden road damage. The public is reminded to find alternative routes and adhere to the safety message: "turn around, don’t drown." Read full story
Cary Man Arrested on Child Sex Exploitation Charges
Gustavo Limon of Cary was arrested on nine counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor after police found pornographic videos and images of young children on his devices. The charges suggest he duplicated the exploitative materials. He is being held on a $180,000 bond and has been prohibited from accessing tablets or computers while in jail.
The arrest was highlighted at a 'know2protect' news conference by the Department of Homeland Security, part of a broader campaign to combat online child exploitation. The DHS highlighted the significant increase in online child sexual exploitation and abuse, with reports skyrocketing from 1 million in 2014 to 36 million in 2023. North Carolina alone saw 24,000 tips of child sex crimes.
The 'know2protect' campaign aims to educate parents and teens about online predators, providing tools to identify threats and support victims. In 2023, the DHS arrested more than 4,000 individuals for online child sex crimes, demonstrating the ongoing effort to address this critical issue. Read full report
