The Disconnect Between Military Support Programs and Reality
In America, gestures of support for military families often fail to meet their intended mark. This story begins with a family settling into a new home in Jacksonville, North Carolina, just days before the birth of their third child, Andrew. Born into a peacetime Marine Corps family, Andrew's early years were marked by frequent relocations, moving from North Carolina to Virginia, Australia, and back several times before high school.
Now a graduate student at North Carolina State University, Andrew lives with his newly retired father, Lee, and his mother in North Carolina, their chosen permanent home after 35 years of military service. Earlier this year, Lee encouraged Andrew to apply for the North Carolina Scholarship for Children of Wartime Veterans to help with his studies. The scholarship had two residency requirements: either the veteran must have been a North Carolina resident at the start of service, or the child must have been born and continuously lived in North Carolina.
Although Andrew was born in North Carolina, his military family's relocations disqualified him from the scholarship due to the continuous residency requirement. This moment underscored the broader struggles faced by military families. The frequent moves disrupt education and social stability, creating challenges that go beyond mere logistics.
The rejection of Andrew's scholarship application highlighted the gap between well-intentioned gestures of support and the actual needs of military families. While programs like the scholarship aim to honor sacrifices, the stringent requirements often overlook the unique circumstances of military life.
This story is not just about a missed scholarship; it's about the broader issue of inclusion and recognition for service members and their families. Military families often endure sacrifices that go unacknowledged, despite the nation's frequent expressions of gratitude.
The reality of their lives—marked by constant relocations and missed family milestones—reveals a disconnect between public sentiment and meaningful support. Read full story

Tiny Home Villages: A Philanthropic Response to Homelessness
In the face of a nationwide homelessness crisis, tiny home villages have multiplied, thanks to significant philanthropic support.
Over the past five years, these villages have increased from 34 to 123, backed by donors such as Sobrato Philanthropies and the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation.
These tiny homes offer quick and cost-effective shelter but are seen as a temporary solution rather than addressing the root problem of insufficient affordable housing.
Projects like the Tiny Homes Village in North Carolina demonstrate the potential and challenges of such initiatives, providing long-term housing and services for the severely mentally ill.
Meanwhile, California's severe homelessness crisis highlights the need for both immediate and long-term solutions. Critics argue for a greater focus on permanent housing, while proponents view interim housing as a necessary step in the process. Read full report
Cary Man Charged with Felony for Leaving Dog in Hot Car
In Cary, 55-year-old Paul Fisher III faces felony animal cruelty charges for intentionally leaving a dog in a hot car, allegedly as a form of discipline.
The dog was rescued from extreme heat by first responders and is now recovering at the Wake County Animal Center. This incident comes shortly after a similar case in Wake County where seven French bulldog puppies were left in a hot car, resulting in the death of one puppy.
Fisher, who also faces charges for possessing a stolen license plate, made a video court appearance and is being held on a $5,000 bond. He is barred from having animals and will return to court on July 31. Read full article
