Cary Extends GoCary Fare-Free Service Through June 2025

In a move to maintain affordable transportation options for residents, the Cary Town Council approved the 2025 budget on June 27, 2024, ensuring GoCary will remain fare-free until June 30, 2025. This decision extends the fare-free policy for GoCary Door to Door Tier 1 service, while Tiers 2 and 3 will continue to operate with regular fares.

The financial support for this initiative largely comes from federal and state transit grants, reimbursements from municipal partners, and allocations from Wake County transit tax dollars via the Wake County Transit Plan. This blend of funding sources allows Cary to sustain its commitment to accessible public transportation.

Residents are encouraged to utilize the new GoCary app for planning trips and tracking buses in real-time across nine routes, including the newly launched Downtown Loop. The app aims to enhance the convenience and efficiency of using GoCary services.

For more information on local transit options, visit GoCary.org.

How do you feel about the Cary Town Council's decision to extend GoCary's fare-free service until June 30, 2025, for Tier 1?

Astronauts Safe Despite Boeing's Spacecraft Troubles

Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who embarked on a mission to test Boeing's Starliner spacecraft on June 5, are experiencing indefinite delays in their return due to a series of technical issues.

Originally, the mission was to last about a week, with a brief docking at the International Space Station (ISS) before heading back to Earth. However, issues such as thruster malfunctions and helium leaks have complicated their schedule. Despite these setbacks, Boeing and NASA emphasize that the astronauts are safe and not stranded.

The spacecraft is designed to remain in space for up to 210 days, and NASA has taken measures to extend its operational limits by recharging its batteries. Extensive tests at NASA's White Sands Test Facility are planned to troubleshoot and resolve the current problems before the astronauts can safely return.

The development of Starliner has been plagued with difficulties from the start. Its first test flight in 2019 failed due to an onboard clock error, which prevented it from reaching its intended orbit. A subsequent unmanned test flight in 2022 encountered thruster issues, though it managed to dock with the ISS. Additional problems, including issues with the parachute system and potential fire hazards, further delayed manned missions.

These setbacks have resulted in significant financial losses for Boeing, which was contracted by NASA for $4.2 billion to establish regular astronaut transport to the ISS.

The spacecraft’s first regular flight is now slated for February 2025, but the persistent technical challenges raise questions about the future of the Starliner program, despite Boeing officials affirming their commitment to its success. Read full story

Priceless Family Heirlooms Mistakenly Donated

Tammy and Matthew Nathan of Raleigh are seeking to recover valuable family heirlooms accidentally donated to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

The couple, who lost nearly everything in Hurricane Ivan 20 years ago, had saved sentimental items in a jewelry armoire that was mistakenly given away with other furniture.

The armoire, sold the next day, contained wedding bands over a century old, Navy promotion rings, and diamond earrings intended for their daughter’s wedding.

Despite discouraging remarks from others, Tammy remains hopeful that someone will recognize the significance of the items and return them. Habitat for Humanity ReStore volunteers have been supportive, though they do not keep records of who purchased the armoire.

The store manager has promised to notify the family if the jewelry is returned. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Raleigh Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Read full story

Swimming Safety: The Impact of Swimwear Colors on Visibility in Lakes and Pools

Concerns about the visibility of children's swimwear in aquatic environments have prompted renewed attention to swimming safety. Research has shown that certain colors of bathing suits can either enhance or diminish the visibility of swimmers, particularly children, making it crucial to select appropriate swimwear for safety.

In lakes, swimwear in green, various shades of blue, purple, grey, black, and white tends to blend with the natural surroundings, making it difficult to spot children in the water. Similarly, in swimming pools, blue and white bathing suits are less visible, which can pose a significant risk.

The importance of constant adult supervision is underscored by these findings. Ensuring children are easily seen while swimming can prevent potential accidents and enhance overall safety in aquatic settings. See original post

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇

The Nancy Jones House stands today between Cary and Morrisville. In its heyday (built around 1803), it was a singular house on what once was the original stage coach road between the capital, Raleigh, to the newly formed University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the former state capital at Hillsborough.
