High Bond Set for Driver in Deadly Memorial Day Collision
Jordan Porter, a 25-year-old man, faced a $3 million bond after being indicted on multiple charges, including three counts of second-degree murder following a devastating DWI crash in Garner that resulted in the death of a local family. The incident, which occurred on Memorial Day, also led to charges of reckless driving and driving while impaired for Porter.
Court documents reveal that Porter was driving significantly over the speed limit at 82 mph in a 45 mph zone when his Chevy Trailblazer ran a red light on U.S. 70. The vehicle collided with a Mazda CX5 Select and a Cadillac Escalade. Tyler and Susan Campbell, the occupants of the Mazda, died at the scene, and their 8-year-old son, Miles, later declared brain dead at WakeMed, became an organ donor.
Investigations uncovered that prior to the crash, Porter had consumed alcohol and smoked marijuana. His vehicle, which had not undergone a safety inspection since February 2020, was reportedly in need of critical repairs to the brakes and steering, contributing to the tragedy.
Despite the devastating impact on the Campbell family, Karl Knudsen, Porter’s attorney, argued that incarcerating Porter for life would not amend the losses incurred. Porter, who also sustained injuries in the crash, has a pending family life with two children and another on the way. Read full story
Plan Ahead: Traffic and Parking Alerts for Downtown Raleigh Graduations
This weekend, downtown Raleigh will be teeming with activity and traffic due to high school graduation ceremonies at the Raleigh Convention Center. Wake County Public School System's events will feature graduates from Cary, Rolesville, and Enloe high schools, who kicked off the celebrations on Friday. The schedule promises a bustling few days with twelve ceremonies lined up from Friday through Monday.
As families and graduates converge on the convention center, they are advised to allow extra time for parking and walking to the venue. With thousands expected to attend, traffic congestion is inevitable, especially as attendees vie for parking not only with other ceremony-goers but also with concert attendees at the nearby Red Hat Amphitheater. Evening ceremonies will coincide with concerts scheduled for Saturday and Sunday nights, adding to the parking challenges.
Adding to the congestion, ongoing repairs from a sewer line rupture on South McDowell Street near Davie Street have reduced traffic to a single lane, with completion expected Saturday afternoon.
For those dropping off graduates, designated areas are available under the 'Shimmer Wall' on McDowell Street and along Cabarrus Street. Raleigh police officers will be stationed around the convention center to assist with traffic flow during these peak times. Read full story
