North Carolina's Nursing Crisis Deepens, Universities Struggle to Keep Pace
North Carolina is grappling with a significant nursing shortage that has worsened due to pandemic-related burnout, with projections indicating a shortfall of up to 18,600 nurses by 2033.
To combat this, Triangle universities are increasing their efforts to train more nurses.
Braxton Nowell, a nurse who started his career at the pandemic's onset, exemplifies the commitment needed to tackle this crisis, despite facing educational bottlenecks that limit new student admissions.
UNC plans to expand its nursing program facilities to accommodate more students by 2026. Meanwhile, current students like Kylie Goodman remain dedicated to pursuing nursing, undeterred by the pandemicโs challenges.

Red Lobster's Financial Woes: Beyond 'Endless Shrimp'
Red Lobster, known for its popular "Endless Shrimp" promotion, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, highlighting deeper financial struggles.
The chain's difficulties stem from an accumulation of debt and poor financial strategies, including the sale of its real estate by former owner Golden Gate Capital.
This decision significantly increased operational costs as property prices rose. Current owner Thai Union is now under scrutiny as it navigates the bankruptcy process, with industry watchers citing broader challenges such as changing consumer habits and economic pressures.
Stakeholders hope for a turnaround that allows Red Lobster to remain a key player in the seafood industry.
Mother and Son Hospitalized After Dog Attack Near Jordan Lake
In a disturbing incident near Jordan Lake in the Firefly Overlook neighborhood, a mother and her son were attacked by a pack of pit bulls, leading to hospitalization from bites on their legs and hands.
Previously, local resident Nels Popp had encountered an aggressive dog in the same area. Another individual was also attacked by these dogs but escaped to receive medical care.
Three of the dogs involved have been captured, and their owner, Brittney Fountain, is facing charges related to the attacks and the condition of the dogs. Read Full Story
School Funding Crisis: Wake County Educators Push for Increased Allocations
At a recent public hearing, Wake County Educators, including teachers and bus drivers, called for increased budget allocations to meet the school board's request of $707.5 million.
The current proposal by the county manager offers $49 million more than last year but is $14 million less than requested.
This funding gap could lead to salary issues and possible staff reductions. The school district highlights the need for a minimum wage of $20 per hour for bus drivers and a 4% salary increase for other staff.
The county commissioners will finalize the budget on June 3, following a work session to discuss possible adjustments. Read Full Article

Courage to Battle Royals in Key NWSL Clash This Friday
The North Carolina Courage, currently sixth in the NWSL standings, face Utah Royals FC this Friday at WakeMed Soccer Park.
The match is notable not only for its importance in helping the Courage break a losing streak but also as their debut on Prime Video. North Carolina has a solid record at home and has not lost in 13 straight regular-season games there.
Their last encounter with Utah resulted in a loss, despite dominating the game statistically. Utah, languishing at the bottom of the table, shares a similar playstyle with North Carolina, marked by high possession rates but has struggled defensively and offensively.
The match is critical for the Courage to regain momentum in their season, amidst challenges from injuries and a demanding schedule. Read Full Story
