One Dead, Four Injured After Vehicle Crashes Into Raleigh Home

A severe car accident occurred early Thursday morning in Raleigh when a vehicle driven by Jelson Molina Carbajal, 28, crashed into a home on Poole Road, resulting in one death and four injuries.

Police reports indicate that Carbajal lost control of his Ford Explorer while attempting a left turn, causing the vehicle to cross Poole Road and strike three men seated in front of a residence. One of the victims, Demetrius Smith, 47, died from his injuries, while the others, including Carbajal's passenger, were hospitalized.

Carbajal has been charged with multiple offenses, including driving while impaired and felony death by vehicle. Read Full Story

Flashing Red: NC Traffic Signals to Adopt New Malfunction Protocol

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced a significant change in the way traffic signals will operate during malfunctions. To enhance safety and consistency, traffic signals across the state will now default to flashing red in all directions when they experience issues such as equipment failures or perceived errors.

This new protocol means drivers must treat the flashing red signals as they would an all-way stop, ensuring that all vehicles and pedestrians come to a complete stop before proceeding. This change replaces the previous yellow-red flashing mode, where main corridors with heavier traffic received a flashing yellow light, allowing cautious passage, while side street drivers faced a flashing red light, requiring them to stop and wait for a safe gap in traffic.

NCDOT manages over 9,000 signalized intersections across North Carolina. The department plans to implement this change gradually over the next year as part of its routine traffic signal maintenance.  Read Full Story

AI and Automation Lead to New Discoveries in Laser Technology

A consortium of six AI-driven automated laboratories has made a significant breakthrough in the discovery of new laser materials.

Detailed in the journal Science, the project involved labs from various global institutions working together to create, test, and refine light-emitting compounds.

The effort resulted in 621 new compounds, including one that emits blue laser light with unprecedented efficiency. This achievement highlights the ability of automated labs to surpass human scientists in some areas, offering new possibilities for advanced displays and telecommunications devices.
