Rangers Capitalize on Power Play to Clinch Game 1 Against Hurricanes

The Rangers excelled in special teams play, scoring twice during power plays and repelling all of Carolina's attempts during penalties.

The game opened with swift action, as Mika Zibanejad of the Rangers exploited a defensive error to score early. Carolina responded promptly with a goal from Jaccob Slavin, but subsequent penalties led to two more goals for the Rangers in the first period.

Although the Hurricanes narrowed the margin in the third period through Martin Necas and later Seth Jarvis, Artemi Panarin’s decisive goal for New York midway through the third kept the Rangers ahead.

The game concluded 4-3, with Igor Shesterkin’s crucial saves in the final moments ensuring a Rangers victory.  Read Full Story

Ironman at 75: How Dick Reaves Defied Age and Expectations

Credit: Dick Reaves

Dick Reaves, a name synonymous with perseverance and community spirit in Cary, recently marked a spectacular milestone by finishing first in his age group at the Half Ironman Triathlon in White Lake, NC. At 75, not only did Dick complete the grueling 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run, he did so in a commendable time of 8 hours, 24 minutes, and 16.1 secondsovercoming a flat tire during the bike segment to secure his victory.

A resident of Cary since 1974, Dick's deep roots in the community are matched only by his commitment to running. Having participated in every Cary Road Race since 1985 and completed 21 marathons worldwide—including prestigious races in Boston, Chicago, New York, and Dublin—Dick's dedication to the sport is evident. His journey of over 24,901 miles, a distance equivalent to circling the globe, showcases a lifelong passion for pushing physical and mental boundaries.

This remarkable achievement at the Half Ironman not only highlights Dick's athletic prowess but also his role as a loyal subscriber among the "Mavericks," a group of Cary Spotlight readers who have engaged with over 100 editions of the newsletter. His story is an inspiration to us all, proving that age is merely a number when it comes to pursuing and achieving extraordinary goals.

Dick’s unwavering spirit from his early days in Walnut Hills to his current involvement in the Cary community, make his story a compelling feature for today’s Cary Spotlight. As Cary continues to evolve, residents like Dick Reaves remind us of the enduring strength and vibrant spirit that define our community.

And in another first, we recorded a phone interview with Dick Reaves as our first episode of "Hit Record", Cary Spotlight's Podcast.

Editor’s Note: Dick finished three Boston Marathons when he was 40, 50 and 60 years old. Maybe “old” is not the right word…

Just curious…
