Joshua Dean, Another Boeing 737 Max Whistleblower, Dies After Sudden Illness

Joshua Dean, a 45-year-old former quality auditor for Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems and a whistleblower on safety issues within the Boeing 737 Max program, has tragically passed away after a sudden illness. Dean died in a hospital on Tuesday morning following a critical two-week health battle that began with difficulty breathing. He was diagnosed with influenza B, an MRSA staph infection, and subsequently developed pneumonia. His condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to further complications including a stroke and the need for life-support through an ECMO machine.

Dean had previously filed a formal whistleblower complaint with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2023, citing improper manufacturing practices he witnessed at Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Kansas. His allegations included mechanics incorrectly drilling holes and improperly fitting parts on the fuselage of Boeing 737 Max planes. His actions reportedly led to his dismissal from the company, which he believed was in retaliation for his outspoken concerns over safety.

The news of his death comes shortly after the death of another Boeing whistleblower, John Barrett, who was found dead from an apparent suicide just a day after testifying against Boeing.

This sequence of events casts a shadow over the aviation industry, already scrutinized after a series of incidents involving Boeing aircraft. Dean's commitment to safety and the serious allegations he raised continue to underscore the ongoing concerns regarding manufacturing practices in the aerospace sector. Read Full Story

RDU Announces Alaska Airlines' Move to Terminal 1 in Optimization Push

Alaska Airlines is preparing for a significant operational shift at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), moving its operations from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1, effective May 8. This adjustment aligns with the airport's strategy to better utilize gate space and support an expanding network of airlines and destinations. Previously, similar relocations involved Breeze Airways and Sun Country Airlines, underscoring a pattern of strategic organizational changes within RDU’s terminal setup.

The motivation behind Alaska Airlines’ relocation is multifaceted, focusing on optimizing terminal operations to accommodate ongoing growth and higher passenger traffic, which has been setting new records at RDU. Alaska Airlines, which maintains a sole route in North Carolina connecting RDU with Seattle-Tacoma International Airport—a major hub for the airline—will join six other carriers operating out of Terminal 1 after the move.

To ensure that the transition is as seamless as possible for travelers, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority has indicated that comprehensive updates to signage around the airport will be implemented. These updates will be visible on roads leading into the airport, throughout parking lots, and in parking decks. Moreover, for passengers who might find themselves at Terminal 2 by mistake, the airport facilitates a convenient connection allowing travelers to walk to Terminal 1 within approximately five minutes via the central parking deck.

In summary, this move not only caters to the operational needs of Alaska Airlines but also plays a crucial part in RDU’s larger plan to enhance its capacity and efficiency in handling flights and passenger traffic, ensuring readiness for continued expansion in air travel services. Read full story

For a full list of direct flight destinations from RDU, which includes upcoming services and more detailed information on flight times and frequencies, passengers are encouraged to check the official RDU website or contact specific airlines.
