In Mid-Flight Tragedy, Duke Professor's Legacy Soars as Passenger Lands Plane Safely
The academic community and beyond are mourning the loss of Joseph Izatt, a 61-year-old esteemed professor from Duke University's biomedical engineering department, following a tragic incident wherein he suffered a fatal heart attack while piloting a private plane.
The flight, destined for Raleigh-Durham International Airport, took an unexpected turn as Izatt became incapacitated. Displaying remarkable resolve, the sole passenger aboard the aircraft assumed control, successfully navigating and landing the plane with guidance from air traffic control.
This incident, captured by an onlooker, underscores the unpredictability of life and the profound impact of human resilience in the face of dire circumstances.
Events of this nature, while rare, echo the importance of preparedness and the indomitable spirit of individuals confronted with critical challenges.
Under Pressure: The Pioneering WWII Scientists Who Explored the Limits of Underwater Survival
At the onset of World War II, the Allied forces recognized the strategic importance of mastering submarine warfare.
Scientists at University College London, led by their dedication to the cause and a relentless pursuit of knowledge, undertook groundbreaking research into the challenges of undersea survival and diving technologies.
Their experiments, marked by self-sacrifice and ingenuity, were instrumental in advancing the technologies that would later play a crucial role in the Normandy landings.
Rachel Lance's book, "Chamber Divers," chronicles these scientists' journey, highlighting their contributions to military science and the understanding of human physiology under extreme conditions.
Despite the ethical questions that their methods would raise today, their work remains a testament to the lengths to which individuals are willing to go in times of dire need.
Lance has undertaken military research using a hyperbaric chamber at Duke University, where the conditions of air and pressure can be adjusted to simulate the environment experienced by divers and submarines.

Love, Learning, and Liberation in 'Things We Never Got Over’
Lucy Score's "Things We Never Got Over" tells the compelling story of Naomi's unexpected journey in the small town of Knockemout, Virginia, after leaving her wedding. Stuck with her previously unknown niece, Naomi navigates new beginnings, including a romance with local Knox. Throughout, she learns critical life lessons about change, the importance of family, forgiveness, community support, healing, and finding one’s voice.
Here are the distilled essences of wisdom from Naomi's journey in Knockemout:
The Courage to Change: Naomi's audacious decision to not go through with her wedding is a testament to the importance of following one’s heart, despite societal pressures.
The Imperfections of Family: Despite a fraught relationship with her twin sister, Tina, Naomi comes to embrace the flawed yet unbreakable bond of family.
A New Leaf: Naomi’s relocation offers her the blank canvas she needs to repaint her life, discovering anew her purpose among the town's idiosyncratic inhabitants.
Unexpected Love: The spark between Naomi and Knox, the town's bartender/barber, serves as a reminder that love often arrives in the most unforeseen moments.
Authenticity and Vulnerability: In her new environment, Naomi learns the value of being true to oneself and the strength found in vulnerability.
The Power of Community: The warm embrace of the Knockemout community shows Naomi that belonging and support can be found in the most unexpected places.
The Act of Forgiveness: Naomi's journey underscores the healing that comes from forgiving oneself and others, paving the way for a brighter future.
Seeking Support: Naomi’s experiences highlight the importance of asking for help and leaning on others during challenging times.
The Process of Healing: The narrative honors the slow and often difficult process of healing from past traumas, celebrating each small victory along the way.
Finding One’s Voice: Naomi’s evolution is marked by her learning to advocate for herself and her values, using her newfound strength to impact the world around her.
Just curious…

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
C) Caquelon
National Cheese Fondue Day is celebrated each year on April 11. Since cheese is such a popular (and delicious) ingredient, this day recognizes a food holiday that many enjoy. Fondue is a dish of melted cheese or other ingredients, served in a communal pot, known as the caquelon.
This pot is placed over a small portable stove known as the réchaud. People then dip the bread into the cheese using long-stemmed forks. Meat, crackers, and vegetables may also be dipped into the cheese. Cheese fondue consists of a blend of cheeses, wine, and seasoning. It is a common delicacy that is available at most restaurants and can be easily made at home.
