No Child Hungry: Durham's Bold Plan for Free Meals for All Students

Durham Public Schools in North Carolina is on the cusp of implementing a universal free lunch program for its 32,000 students, in an effort to tackle food insecurity and the stigma associated with free meal programs.

This initiative, part of a federal bill, would make it the largest district in the state to provide such a service, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner to students without the requirement of financial documentation from families.

The move could also lead to administrative efficiencies and financial savings by removing the need for meal application forms and the collection of unpaid meal debts.

Should other school districts in North Carolina follow Durham's lead?

 B) Rachel Carson (1907–1964) Link to Bio

Rachel Carson was an American marine biologist, author, and conservationist whose landmark book, Silent Spring, is credited with advancing the global environmental movement. Her work meticulously detailed the adverse effects of indiscriminate pesticide use on the environment, particularly on birds.

Carson’s ability to combine scientific information with poetic prose made her message accessible and compelling to a wide audience. Her advocacy led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides and spurred an environmental consciousness that inspired the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Carson’s legacy as one of the most famous women in history is a testament to the power of science and writing in catalyzing change.
