Marathon for a Cause: Cary's Tobacco Road Race Supports Local Charities
The Tobacco Road Marathon and Half Marathon in Cary, set for March 17, is more than a race; it's a major fundraising event that has contributed over $1.3 million to local charities, benefiting Cary and surrounding communities.
The race, which kicks off at 7 a.m. on Green Hope School Road, features 20 miles of the scenic American Tobacco Trail. Known for its flat and fast course with a downhill finish, the marathon offers an ideal opportunity for both seasoned and less experienced runners to set personal records or qualify for the Boston Marathon, with up to 20 percent of participants achieving this feat in past years.
This philanthropic event benefits several key charities, including JDRF, the American Red Cross, Hope For The Warriors, and the Triangle Rails To Trails Conservancy. The impact of the race extends beyond the runners, as the all-volunteer organization behind the marathon uses the event to funnel the passion of the running community into meaningful support for these causes.
Note to Editor from Dick Reaves (a Cary Spotlight Milestone Maverick): “If you or someone from Cary Spotlight want to experience a big Cary event, come on out to the Tobacco Road Marathon/Half Marathon on Sunday morning. It is really an exciting atmosphere. You may have to park at a remote lot and take a shuttle to the race site. The on-site parking is by permit only and sells out quickly when the race registration starts. I’ve always taken the shuttle.”
U.S. and Ireland Unite in Agricultural Research for a Sustainable Future
Launched in 2006 and focusing on agriculture since 2015, a trilateral research and development partnership among the U.S., Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland aims to solve critical agricultural challenges.
With significant efforts directed towards combating bovine respiratory disease and improving pig health, the collaboration involves researchers from various institutions working on understanding and mitigating the impact of specific pathogens that have become resistant to antibiotics.
This partnership not only addresses immediate concerns in livestock health and agricultural productivity but also underscores the importance of international cooperation in advancing agricultural practices, enhancing animal welfare, and ensuring economic stability within the sector.
North Carolina plays a significant role in U.S. pork production, serving as an economic powerhouse within the industry. The state's hog and pork processing sector generates more than $10 billion in economic output annually.
The Lore of Blarney: Kissing the Stone of Eloquence
Blarney Castle, built in the 15th century near Cork, Ireland, is renowned for the Blarney Stone, embedded in its battlements.
Legends attribute magical eloquence to those who kiss the stone, a tradition that has endured through the ages. The stone's historical and cultural significance, combined with the adventurous act required to kiss it, continues to draw on average 400,000 visitors annually.
The act of kissing the Blarney Stone, however, is not without its challenges. Positioned 85 feet above ground in the castle's east battlement, reaching the stone requires a climb up 128 narrow steps. Visitors must then lean backwards over the parapet's edge, an act that in earlier times was performed with the aid of others holding the kisser by the ankles. Today, safety measures include lying on a mat and grasping iron railings, with assistants on hand to ensure safety.
Despite safety concerns and the fact that the stone is not sterilized between each kiss, its popularity remains unscathed. The castle and the surrounding area also offer various attractions, making it a must-visit for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in Irish lore and beauty.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
B) Nellie Bly (1864-1922)
Nellie Bly basically set the standard for investigative journalism. At a time when women writers were confined to the society pages, Bly tackled more serious topics like mental health, poverty, and corruption in politics.
She's most famous for going undercover at the insane asylum on Blackwell’s (now Roosevelt) Island. Her exposé on the horrific conditions brought about much-needed changes to patient care.
She also set the world record for circumnavigating the world. She completed the feat in just 72 days.
