Triangle Universities Launch Groundbreaking Cellular Research

The collaborative endeavor involving Duke University, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University, supported by a $3 million grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative*, targets the exploration and manipulation of biological networks through a focus on kinases.

This three-year project is poised to enhance our understanding of how cellular systems operate, with implications for improving the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions and other kinase-related disorders.

By developing new tools for monitoring and manipulating protein kinases, the collaboration between the laboratories of Scott Soderling, Klaus Hahn, and Albert Keung combines diverse expertise to uncover the structural organization of cellular networks, marking a significant step towards predictive biology and therapeutic advancements.

*The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is an organization established and owned by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan with an investment of 99 percent of the couple's wealth from their Facebook shares over their lifetime.

Leap Day Miracles: Triangle Babies Share the Rarest Birthday

In a heartening display of coincidence and celebration, the Triangle area in North Carolina observed the birth of several babies on the rare Leap Day of February 29th.

Among these, an especially touching story emerged from Duke University Hospital, where Dr. Kai Sun gave birth to her daughter Chloe, sharing with her a Leap Day birthday.

This unique bond and the collective joy of the other Leap Day births across hospitals like WakeMed and UNC Health, each marking the occasion with festive Leap Day hats for the newborns, brought a sense of wonder and unity to the community.

This series of events not only highlighted the rarity of Leap Day but also the shared joy and love within families and between them and the medical staff who welcomed these new lives into the world. Read full story
