Question: Why do snakes flick their tongues in and out?

(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.)

The #1 Roth Conversion Mistake That Costs Retirees

Most people missed the first Roth conversion window. History is offering a rare second chance — but not a long one.

With today's tax rates extended, IRA Millionaires have a brief stretch of historically low brackets left. When it closes, the math changes: higher rates, bigger required distributions, and fewer conversion opportunities each year you wait.

Craig Wear, CFP®, has spent 15+ years helping more than 3,000 families with $1M+ in IRAs plan Roth conversions — helping them avoid a projected $10B+ in lifetime taxes. His new book, Roth Conversion Reset, is the step-by-step playbook:

Lock in today's low rates
Avoid RMD surprises at 73
Protect your spouse from survivor taxes
Keep more for your heirs

The book is free — no credit card, no shipping. The full PDF lands in your inbox in minutes.

Explore the Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival

Every August, Downtown Cary turns into an open-air art gallery for the Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the event, and it's grown into one of the most-loved traditions in the Triangle.

More than 250 juried artists from across the country set up along the streets around Cary Town Hall Campus, filling the weekend with paintings, pottery, jewelry, and just about every other kind of handmade craft you can imagine. Best of all, it's completely free to attend.

Beyond the artist booths, there's plenty to keep you busy. Four stages keep live music and entertainment going throughout the weekend, and more than 25 food and beverage vendors are on hand if you get hungry. Grown-ups can unwind in the beer garden or the new Lazy Lounge, while kids have their own space to enjoy with Kid Daze, including the popular Kid Collectors Market where they can buy small, affordable art pieces made just for them.

What makes Lazy Daze feel special is all the small, unexpected touches. Street painters bring the Chalk Walk to life, local artists lead hands-on activities, and this year's 50th anniversary brings back the whimsical Solina: Dragonfly sculpture, complete with lights and gentle bells. Because parking downtown is limited during the festival, biking, rideshare, or the free GoCary shuttle are the easiest ways to get there.

Good to Know:

Location: Cary Town Hall Campus, 316 N. Academy St., Cary, NC 27513 | Directions
Hours: Saturday & Sunday, August 22–23, 2026, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day
Amenities: Four entertainment stages, 25+ food and beverage vendors, beer garden, Kid Daze activities, artist market, restrooms, ATMs onsite
Entry: Free! (Service animals only — this is not a pet-friendly event)
Tip: The festival happens rain or shine, and downtown parking fills up fast — biking, rideshare, or the free GoCary shuttle are your best bets for getting there easily.

Hello, Rome!
Gateway to Ancient Wonders and La Dolce Vita

Welcome to Rome, Italy, a city where you can stand in a 2,000-year-old amphitheater in the morning and toss a coin into a fountain by lunch. There's no direct flight from RDU to Rome's Fiumicino Airport (FCO), but you've got plenty of connecting options through major hubs like New York, Atlanta, or across the Atlantic through cities like Frankfurt and Reykjavik, making the trip an easy one to plan. Once you land, get ready for a city that mixes ancient history, incredible food, and a slower, more joyful pace of life all in one place.

Why Visit Rome?

  • The Colosseum:
This massive amphitheater once hosted gladiator battles in front of roaring crowds of 50,000 people. Walk through the same arches ancient Romans used and imagine the noise and energy that once filled the stands.

  • Vatican City:
Home to the Pope and some of the most famous art in the world, this tiny independent state packs a serious punch. Spend a few hours in the Vatican Museums, crane your neck at Michelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, then step into the massive St. Peter's Basilica next door.

  • Trastevere:
Just across the Tiber River from the city center, this neighborhood trades ancient ruins for cobblestone alleys, ivy-covered buildings, and some of the best pasta in Rome. Wander without a plan, grab a plate of cacio e pepe, and watch the neighborhood come alive at night.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A) To smell

Snakes flick their tongues to "smell" and explore their environment. The tongue catches tiny scent and chemical pieces from the air or ground. When the snake pulls its tongue back inside, it puts those pieces into a special part on the roof of its mouth called the Jacobson's organ (or vomeronasal organ).
