What do you call a guy who brings a professional clown to his own firing? A legend.

When Auckland copywriter Josh Thompson received an ominous email from HR to "discuss his role," he knew his time at the advertising agency was up.

Under New Zealand law, employees are legally allowed to bring a "support person" to redundancy meetings. While most people bring a lawyer or a union rep, Josh paid $200 to hire a professional clown named Joe.

When Josh walked into the boardroom, his bosses were hit with the ultimate corporate power move. While managers awkwardly tried to deliver the grim news, Joe spent the entire meeting aggressively twisting balloons into poodles and unicorns.

The rubber squeaking was so loud that the bosses had to ask the clown to keep it down just so they could finish firing his client.

The best part? When HR finally handed over the termination paperwork, the clown didn't break character for a second—he immediately began miming dramatic, over-the-top tears to comfort Josh.

Josh still lost his job, but the stunt went hyper-viral globally and landed him a fresh new advertising role almost immediately.

Management can take away your salary, but they can never take away your right to an emotional support clown.
