4 Simple Movement Habits
to Build Strength and Balance

Building strength and improving balance does not have to happen entirely at the gym. The way you move throughout an ordinary day can also play an important role in maintaining mobility and physical confidence over time.

From getting out of bed to carrying groceries, working at a desk, climbing stairs, or reaching into a cabinet, everyday movements regularly challenge muscles, joints, and balance.

One habit that can work against that is staying in the same position for long periods. Hours spent sitting at a desk or standing in one place can contribute to stiffness and reduce opportunities for muscles and joints to move through different positions.

Rather than simply adding another workout, the goal can be to incorporate more movement into routines that already exist.

Simple movement habits worth building:

  • Change positions every 30 to 60 minutes. Stand if you have been sitting, sit if you have been standing, or take a short walk.

  • Pay attention to posture during everyday activities. Consider how you position your body while cooking, driving, working at a computer, or doing household tasks.

  • Add quick strength and balance exercises to existing routines. Try standing on one leg while waiting for the coffee to brew or doing calf raises while brushing your teeth.

  • Focus on how you move, not only how much. Controlled, comfortable movement can help maintain mobility and confidence with everyday tasks.

These habits can become particularly important with age. Maintaining strength and balance supports the ability to perform everyday activities independently and may help reduce the risk of falls and injuries.

One easy way to start is by setting a reminder to move once an hour. Stand, stretch, or take a brief walk when it goes off.

A few minutes may not feel like much, but repeated throughout the day, small movement breaks can turn into a sustainable habit.

Weekly U.S. Food Recall & Safety Roundup

Reporting period: August 12–18, 2026

Bottom line upfront: The jalapeño Salmonella outbreak remains the highest-priority issue this week because of its 345 confirmed illnesses and wide downstream distribution. The Marketside soup recall is the most important new stand-alone retail recall because of the potential Listeria monocytogenes hazard and broad Walmart distribution.

1. Jalapeños and prepared foods — Salmonella Javiana outbreak

Products/brands: Recalled fresh jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors, plus downstream products from Whole Foods Market, NatureBest, H‑E‑B, Taylor Fresh Foods, Hardie’s Fresh Foods and others. Products include salsa, pico de gallo, guacamole, stuffed mushrooms, soup mixes and prepared foods. Newly posted recalls this week expanded the affected retail products.

Distribution: The underlying jalapeños moved through distributors, restaurants and foodservice companies nationwide; newly recalled retail products reached multiple states, including Whole Foods products in 12 states and NatureBest/H‑E‑B products in Texas and Louisiana.

Impact: 345 illnesses in 27 states, 36 hospitalizations and 0 deaths.

Consumer guidance: Do not eat recalled jalapeños or products containing them. Throw them away or return them, and wash and sanitize surfaces they contacted.

2. Marketside Tomato Bisque Soup Kit — possible Listeria

Product: Marketside Tomato Bisque Soup Kit, 14 oz., UPC 194346474004, use-by 8/22/26; approximately 3,240 packages recalled.

Distribution: Select Walmart stores in 29 states, including North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Texas and California. No confirmed illnesses have been reported.

Consumer guidance: Do not eat it. Discard or return it and clean refrigerator surfaces that may have contacted the product.

3. New unidentified Salmonella outbreak — 30 illnesses

FDA added a new Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:- outbreak investigation on August 12 involving 30 illnesses. The food source has not yet been identified, and FDA has begun traceback work. Because no product has been implicated, there is currently no product-specific recall or avoidance recommendation.

FDA also reported that an unidentified Cyclospora investigation increased substantially from 115 to 172 cases during its latest update.

4. Lacnola Lactation Granola — possible Salmonella

Product: The Hampton Grocer Lacnola Lactation Granola, 8 oz., UPC 850035324554. Affected lots are HGLC-102125 / exp. 21OCT2026 and HGLC-021326 / exp. 13FEB2027.

Distribution: Sold nationwide online, including through Amazon, between October 2025 and August 12, 2026. No illnesses have been reported.

Consumer guidance: Dispose of the granola and contact the place of purchase for a refund.

5. Prolon Almond & Cocoa Spread — undeclared tree nuts

Product: Prolon Apulian Almond & Cocoa Spread, 8.47 oz., UPC 850040360530, lot L2755, expiration January 2, 2027. Testing found undeclared cashew, pistachio and hazelnut.

Distribution: Sold through Prolon’s U.S. e-commerce site, either individually or in product bundles. One confirmed allergic reaction has been reported.

Consumer guidance: Anyone with relevant tree-nut allergies should stop consuming it immediately and discard or return it.

6. Gangothri goat and chicken pickles — USDA FSIS recall

Products: Approximately 1,626 pounds of ready-to-eat Gangothri Goat Pickle, Gongura Goat Pickle, Chicken Pickle and Gongura Chicken Pickle, all in 8-oz jars. FSIS says the products were produced without the benefit of federal inspection.

Distribution: Restaurants, retailers and online customers nationwide. No illnesses have been reported. Consumers should not eat the products; discard them or return them.
