Rebecca Cook, from Garner, N.C., combines her profession as a certified prosthetist and her passion for dollmaking to create dolls that reflect the physical diversity of children with limb differences.
Her inspiration came from a young patient, leading to over 40 dolls created with her colleagues for children worldwide. These dolls help kids feel represented and educate their peers about diversity.

North Carolina Woman Ushers in New Year as Powerball's First Millionaire
Pamela Bradshaw, a resident of Clinton, North Carolina, welcomed the new year by becoming the first Powerball millionaire of 2024 with a $1 million win in Times Square.
Her victory came as part of a national lottery promotion, making her the second consecutive North Carolinian to win this title. The win was the result of a second-chance drawing that provided her a VIP trip to New York, where she experienced several personal firsts. Overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude.

Thrift Store's Future Uncertain as Cary Nonprofit Appeals for Aid
Hope Connection, a Cary-based nonprofit, is in a race against time to save its thrift store, Deja Vu Furniture and Home Decor, and continue its mission of helping survivors of abuse and addiction.
The impending demolition of the South Hills Plaza for a new sports complex has forced them to seek a new location. Over five years, the organization has supported over 1,000 individuals through sales from their store and related programs.
Now, facing an urgent need to relocate by March, they require approximately $150,000 to outfit a new space in Zebulon. The nonprofit is reaching out to the community for donations, assuring that funds will support their crucial programs even if the store cannot be saved. Read Full Story

Aho Secures NHL First Star Spot with Record-Breaking Week
Sebastian Aho of the Carolina Hurricanes has been honored as the NHL's First Star of the Week following a remarkable performance where he led the league with 11 points across three games.
This achievement includes a series of firsts and record-equaling feats for both Aho and the franchise. With a season total of 42 points in 34 games, Aho leads his team in several categories and has solidified his position as a key player in the franchise's history.
