FDA Investigates Potential Deliberate Lead Contamination in Children's Applesauce Pouches
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating lead poisoning in children linked to cinnamon applesauce pouches from three brands: WanaBana, Schnucks, and Weis. Over 60 children under six have exhibited lead levels significantly above safe thresholds. The FDA suspects intentional contamination, with all affected products traced to an Ecuadorian manufacturing facility.
Investigations have identified the cinnamon in the pouches, supplied by Negasmart to Austrofoods, as the likely contamination source.
This incident raises concerns about enforcing food safety laws against intentional acts and the limitations of the FDAβs authority over foreign suppliers. The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with various health authorities, are working to trace the origins of the contamination and prevent future incidents. Read Full Story
Road Barricade Ignored, Leads to Daring Flood Rescue of Four
In Apex, North Carolina, a child and three adults were rescued from their flooded car by Apex firefighters after the driver went around a barricade on Sunday night.
The car was trapped by floodwaters from Beaver Creek at 2232 Richardson Road. The Apex Police Department and Fire Department stressed the danger of ignoring road closure signs, particularly in flood-prone areas. The rescue operation, involving a raft, was successfully completed in about 20 minutes without any injuries. Read Full Story
Wake County Confirms End of Norovirus Outbreak at Sushi Nine
Wake County Public Health has announced the end of a norovirus outbreak linked to Sushi Nine, a Raleigh sushi restaurant. The outbreak, first reported on December 1, resulted in 242 complaints from customers who visited between November 28 and December 5.
Following the health guidelines, the restaurant closed for cleaning and reopened with no further complaints. Lab tests confirmed norovirus in three stool samples from affected diners. Read Full Story

NC Courage Extends Nahas' Contract in a Bold Move for Future Success
The North Carolina Courage have announced a three-year contract extension for head coach Sean Nahas, keeping him in charge until the 2026 NWSL season.
Nahas, initially an assistant coach, took over as interim coach in 2021 after the departure of Paul Riley and was subsequently appointed full-time. Wolfpack Gymnastics Begins ACC Era with Impressive Preseason Showcase
In a significant preseason event, the NC State Gymnastics team participated in their annual Red & White Meet at Reynolds Coliseum, marking their first ACC competition since 1984.
The meet introduced six new gymnasts and featured teams led by both experienced and new athletes. Team Red, with a blend of new and veteran talent, won the meet 3-1 over Team White.
