North Carolina Man's Life Transformed by Groundbreaking Gene Therapies for Sickle Cell Disease
Michael Edmonds, born with sickle cell disease, endured a life marked by severe pain and regular hospital visits. His involvement in a gene therapy study at Duke University under Dr. Nirmish Shah, who selected him due to his severe condition, led to a transformative experience.
The FDA's approval of Casgevy and Lyfgenia, therapies that edit or insert genes to combat sickle cell, offered new hope. Despite the risks associated with chemotherapy, part of the treatment, Edmonds and his family decided to proceed.
After undergoing testing and chemotherapy, Edmonds' condition improved markedly. Dr. Shah emphasized the need for wider access to these treatments, considering the limited options available previously. For Edmonds, the treatment marked the beginning of a new, pain-free life.

Research Triangle Park Sees Rebound in Job Postings, Signals Economic Recovery
The Research Triangle Park in North Carolina is experiencing a recovery in job postings, with a 1.02% increase in active listings, now totaling 219,011. This recovery follows a significant dip in job openings at the end of November.
UNC economist Greg Brown, in a briefing by the Kenan Institute, highlighted the stabilization of tech jobs in the region after a year of losses. He stressed the need for continued population growth in the Triangle to meet future job demands, as the area's growth rate exceeds its natural population increase. Read Full Report

Cary Imps Win Crosstown Cup, Host Memorial Tournament for Fallen Hero
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Cary Imps (Cary High School) clinched the Crosstown Cup, outwrestling their rivals from Green Level in a fiercely contested dual. This victory holds particular significance as the team comprises a notable contingent of freshmen and relatively inexperienced wrestlers, underscoring the depth of talent within the squad.
The triumph sets the stage for a significant event: a two-day wrestling tournament at Cary High School, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, starting at 9 am each day. This tournament, open to the public with tickets available at the door for an estimated cost of $10 to $15, is not just a celebration of athletic prowess but also a tribute to a fallen hero, Sergeant Mark Adams, a former Cary wrestler who lost his life serving as a U.S. Marine in Iraq.
In preparation for this significant event, which is expected to draw over 200 coaches, referees, and trainers, the organizers are reaching out to the community for support.
They seek donations in the form of food and refreshments, with a preference for contributions from local restaurants. The response has been heartening, with several local businesses, including Salvio's Pizzeria, Mac’s Tavern, Penn Station, Starbucks, Bruegger’s, Papa John’s, and Ole Time BBQ, already pledging their support.
This upcoming tournament, therefore, represents more than just a sporting event; it's a community gathering to honor a cherished legacy and celebrate the achievements of its young athletes.
