Protect Yourself from North Carolina's Top 5 Holiday Scams

As the festive season approaches in North Carolina, it's vital to stay alert to the rise in scams. Here are five common holiday scams to be aware of:

1. Fake Charities: Scammers set up bogus charity organizations during the holidays, using names similar to real charities and seeking donations through phone calls, emails, or fake websites. Always check the authenticity of a charity before donating.

2. Online Shopping Scams: Unfamiliar websites offering high-demand items at low prices often lead to online shopping scams, delivering counterfeit products or nothing at all. Shop on reputable websites and verify reviews before making purchases.

3. Gift Card Fraud: Scammers steal gift card numbers and PINs in retail stores, draining funds after the cards are loaded by consumers. Inspect gift cards for tampering and buy directly from the retailer’s website when possible.

4. Social Media and Email Phishing: Increased phishing attempts through social media and email during the holidays often contain links that install malware or steal personal information. Be cautious of unsolicited offers and avoid clicking on suspicious links.

5. Travel Scams: Scammers offer fake travel deals or holiday packages, requiring upfront payments for nonexistent bookings. Book travel through trusted agencies and verify the authenticity of any offers.

Stay vigilant this holiday season; if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Verify the legitimacy of all offers, charities, and deals.

A New Era in Medicine: 3D Printing Biomaterials Directly Inside Organs

Researchers from Duke University and Harvard Medical School have developed a pioneering technique using ultrasound for 3D printing biomaterials inside an organ.

This method, known as deep-penetrating acoustic volumetric printing, utilizes a specialized ink that hardens when exposed to ultrasound waves. The technology enables the creation of structures directly within tissues, avoiding invasive surgical procedures.

The researchers successfully demonstrated the technique in pig organs, printing various shapes and even incorporating a chemotherapy drug in the ink. This advancement holds significant potential for future medical applications, including tissue engineering, drug delivery, and the creation of medical devices inside the body. Read Full Story
