Plastic Balloon Claims Life of Rare Beaked Whale at Emerald Isle Beach
On October 30, 2023, a Gervais' Beaked Whale calf was reported stranded in Emerald Isle. The responding team found the calf deceased.
Gervais' Beaked Whales are known for their elusive nature, typically residing in the deep waters off the continental shelf, which makes live sightings an uncommon occurrence. Their lives are mostly spent submerged, far from the human eye.
Post-mortem examination at the N.C. State University confirmed that the calf died from plastic ingestion (a metal foil-coated plastic balloon), a stark reminder of the perils marine life faces from human waste.
The public is encouraged to report any live or dead stranded marine mammals to the appropriate local marine stranding network.
Victim of Weekend Shooting Near Cary Identified, No Suspects Found
In a weekend shooting on Holly Springs Road close to Cary, Patrick A. McNeil, aged 35, was killed. The Wake County Sheriff's Office reported that no suspects have been detained, but the shooting appears to be targeted, posing no immediate threat to the community. The investigation into the shooting is actively continuing.

Tears of Happiness: Local Man's $100,000 Lottery Surprise
69-year-old Darrell Seawell from Knightdale became emotional after finding out he had won $100,000 from a lottery ticket purchased at Mack’s Mart.
Upon claiming his prize and accounting for taxes, Seawell's take-home amount was $71,259, which he intends to deposit in the bank.
The lottery game, which started in March, continues to offer significant prizes, including three $5 million and seven $100,000 prizes that remain to be claimed.
North Carolina Rolls Out Proposed Sports Betting Regulations
North Carolina's Lottery Commission has proposed regulations for the forthcoming sports betting industry, which include barring sportsbook names from stadiums and requiring ID for large bets.
A key tenet of the proposed regulations allows for anonymous betting for amounts under $10,000; however, for larger bets or payouts, personal identification details would be required.
The state’s sports betting law endorses four major professional sports venues, including NFL, NBA, and NHL team homes, as well as the WakeMed Park for in-person sportsbooks.
The rules, set for a public hearing, will guide the state's sports betting authorized at certain sports venues and temporary events. The public can submit comments on the proposed rules anytime through November 27 at this link.

Veterans Day: A Time for Thanks and Thoughtful Conversation
Veterans Day on November 11th is a moment to honor military service and is also an opportunity for personal engagement with veterans. Conversations should be approached with respect and sensitivity.
This Veterans Day, extending thanks to veterans should be coupled with a genuine curiosity about their experiences, and an understanding that while some may choose to share, others may prefer silence.
Here are a few conversation starters that might encourage dialogue:
Inquire about the camaraderie within the ranks: What anecdotes exemplify the bonds they formed?
Discuss challenges: What were the obstacles faced, and how were they overcome?
Reflect on impactful moments: Which experiences during service have left an indelible mark?
Seek wisdom: What lessons from military life have endured into civilian existence?
Understand their perspective: What aspects of military service do they wish more people understood or appreciated?
In doing so, not only do we pay tribute to their contributions, but we also preserve and propagate the stories of those no longer with us, ensuring that their legacies enlighten future generations. Credit: Jim McCann for questions from “What We Can Learn from Veterans – If We Ask” email newsletter.
