NCFC Seals Historic League Title in Dramatic Shootout
North Carolina FC claimed the 2023 USL League One title in a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Charlotte Independence, with Raheem Somersall earning MVP honors. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with Somersall's late goal forcing penalties where NCFC prevailed 5-4, marking their first league final championship in their 17-year history.
In a gripping finale at WakeMed Soccer Park, North Carolina FC emerged as the USL League One champions, defeating Charlotte Independence in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in extra time.
Raheem Somersall, who was later named the Final MVP, scored the equalizing goal in the 112th minute, which led to the decisive penalty kicks. Goalkeeper Brooks Thompson's crucial save and Luis Arriaga's final penalty secured NCFC's victory.
The match was intense throughout, with Charlotte initially taking the lead in the 99th minute through Hector Acosta. Despite Charlotte's slight edge in shots, NCFC managed to put more on target, maintaining pressure throughout the game. The win completes a remarkable worst-to-first transformation for NCFC, who will move up to the USL Championship next season.
Gotham FC's Goalkeeper Heroics Lead Gotham Past Thorns into NWSL Final
Gotham FC goalkeeper Mandy Haught played a pivotal role in her team's 1-0 extra-time victory against Portland Thorns in the NWSL semifinal, notably thwarting a prime scoring opportunity from Thorns' star Sophia Smith. Gotham's win, marked by a late goal from Katie Stengel, propels them to their first NWSL Championship appearance.
The match, played under a relentless downpour, remained scoreless until extra time, when Gotham's Katie Stengel broke through with a decisive goal.
Despite Portland's efforts to balance the game after a defensive first half, Gotham's tenacious defense, led by Haught's vigilant goalkeeping, held firm, limiting the Thorns to minimal scoring opportunities.
The victory not only secures Gotham FC's spot in the NWSL Championship but also extends the career of their captain, Ali Kreiger, as they look to cap off their season with a title win.
